No it's either base AC or escape artist + dex...... Whatever of the two is higher

1. It looks up your total AC
2. It looks up your escape artist skill score (not ranks but the total, ie what appears in your character sheet)
3. It takes whichever is higher, roll a d20 and compares it to d20 + Primary Spell Ability Modifier + Caster level + 12 - 1

Without a berth of escape artist items available, seems like the skill points will never catch up to the caster's modifiers.

I was curious how the check against AC is considered for Bigby, considering some situational sources of AC.
Do all AC types count towards the "base AC" against Bigby?
Hypothetically a character that shows 61 AC on the character sheet (with +2 dodge against single target not shown on the sheet) and 0 Escape Artist skill, what are the numbers against a max CL Bigby? Is the +2 dodge against single target taken into account (assuming 1v1), so the check is made against 63 AC?
Likewise, if the Bigby victim is caught flat-footed by a Bigby out of invis/HiPS/ethereal, will that deny the victim her AC bonus from dex, etc?
Thanks for any insight!

That +2 dodge against single target is only in melee and not applied so it's versus 61 AC.
After you just have to add up :
d20 + Primary Spell Ability Modifier + Caster level + 12 - 1 versus 61
So for a wizard with an INT mod of 11 and CL 30 you're looking at
d20 + 11 + 30 +12 -1 versus 61
<=> d20 versus 9
Caster needs to roll 9 or more for the crushing hand to work.

So if I understood correctly - if I have 50AC it makes absolutely no sense to have 49 Escape artist as it mechanically changes nothing compared to if I'd have 0 in that skill?

As far as Bigby is concerned yes.

Okay - in that form it looks like answer to a question asked in this topic is simply "no".
I'd seriously consider adding some bonuses for having both high AC and Escape Artist. Like +1 for every 5 points in skill when AC is greater. Otherwise its a useless skill that does nothing outside rare RP situations where DM asks for grapple check roll.

Thank you for the quick response and number crunching!
I edited my original post with another question: Does casting Bigby from stealth/invis/ethereal deny the victim their dex bonus to AC and whatever other AC is denied in that situation?
Thanks again!
