How about rest duration based on rest cooldown (in other words based on level)? So it's lower for low level chars and higher for high level chars.
Also, there will be an issue then with interrupted rests. The likelyhood of being interrupted goes up quite a lot with this, so in my opinion the rest should then be scripted to be a force rest at the end of the duration and the cooldown triggered at that time as well.

People would just rest in combat then.
Fail then forced rest.

Assassins -should- have a window to take out casters. Roleplaying being fully warded and ready 100% of the time is straight up godmoding.
1 minute window seems like plenty to even RP the approach and then engage.
Shame on the caster for resting in an unprotected place.
And if you're super paranoid about being taken out by an assassin. Rest in a tavern/inn. Or around friends.
As I stated earlier, I wouldn't want to deal with this kind of mechanic on any build.
Most of my characters don't ever need resting, exactly because I hate having to rest and rebuff afterwards.
However, 1 minute wait on rest would make the game extremely annoying on the only low-level caster I have. At level 9 you have exactly 9 minutes till your medium-term buff (minute per CL) run out. After that you'll have to search for a place to rest, and then have to rebuff. IIRC casting one spell takes a full round, meaning if your character has ten wards, he or she will waste full minute already and then there will be an extra forced wait in addition to that. So, if you play this kind of character for 3 hours actively, then you'll waste 15 minutes of your time staring at your screen while your character snoozes. Parties and companions aren't available all the time, so there will be plenty of situations where you'll staring at character taking a nap with nobody to talk with. Although you aren't supposed to talk while resting either.
I don't know about you, but I have better things to do than something like this.

Following wizard-slayer scenario from earlier, resting during confrontation is an auto-pvp-consent.. so you don't really want a forced rest to happen, ever.

I mean... that's what a low level caster is all about though.
In the end, games are meant as a way to pass time anyways. If you don't like wasting time... don't ever change zones cuz you'll have to wait for it to load. Don't ever update any game ever cuz... that takes time too. Don't ever reset your computerrrrr!!
also totally called this earlier today in IRC:
[09:45] <Selande> what'll be neat
[09:45] <Selande> is when someone complains that they don't want to wait a minute during rest
[09:45] <Selande> that their lives are important or w/e
[09:45] <Selande> and then we just quote them as buffing their char for 10+ turns
[09:46] <Selande> every rest anyways
[09:46] <Selande> and then hardstare at them while they try to refute.

That's a strawman. And not even a good one.

So, if someone wastes time buffing, they should waste MORE time in addition to that not buffing? I don't see a logic here. I mean a buff at least gives your character some bonus (same applies to location loading, updates etc - they do something useful during that time), while forced one minute does absolutely nothing useful.

I can't help what people play.
The suggestion affects everyone equally. It even fixes a lot of complaints about the system (such as described by Passiflora) and encourages roleplay opportunity.
Do you not like roleplay?

I don't see how taking control of character away for one minute helps with roleplay. Therefore I don't see any benefit.

How would people feel about this:
Player in safe rest zone presses "R" to initiate rest
Player is debuffed, rest bar does not appear
A rest timer starts for 4 seconds/level (2 minutes at level 30, 1 minute at level 15)
If the player enters combat or exits the safe rest zone, resting is interrupted
At the end of the rest timer, the player is instantly rested
If rest is interrupted, players can re-initiate rest immediately because they gained no benefits from the interrupted rest.

Could make you rest for 8 hours instead. Or whatever the game equivalence of 8 game hours is. And pay for your spell components.
Your characters aren't immortal and resting shouldn't be metagamed/godmodded.
Try to look past how this might minimally hamper your sleeping-in-the-wilds character and see how it might affect things on a grander scale. Reread the OP plz.

I don't understand the PvP argument at all.
If a caster (or anyone really, it's not build dependant) is caught sleeping somewhere alone in the wilderness by an assassin there shouldn't even be a combat. You're at the mercy of the attacker, period. Unless you set up some things (like traps or w/e) before resting. Anything else seems rather ... incredible ?

I think you're starting to take it personally.
I just don't see anything good about the idea, and since you wrote "Thoughts?", I explained why. Your further arguments also didn't change my opinion.
I wouldn't want to deal with this on any character I play, caster or not. There's not much else to add.
If anything, it reminds me of one of the supposedly RP-heavy server rules where learning a new language required half of RL year of continuous (daily?) roleplaying before the language was granted.

Finally a reason to use traps!

I do not agree with creating more time dump for a server that already is one of the biggest time dumps on NWN2. The rest system is fine how it is to me. Just because I do not like more time taken away from me does not mean I do not like RP either. I just prefer to be actually playing the game instead of sitting there.

As a friendly reminder, please be sure to read through the new rules for the suggestion forums, as posted here: http://bgtscc.net/viewtopic.php?f=443&t=54493
I think the most important take away is to heed rule #2.
Rule #2 wrote:Limit reactions to suggestions to a single post, unless you're only asking for additional details. State your opinion clearly and politely, and leave it at that. Don't let yourself get involved in a prolonged argument with other players. These back-and-forth forum fights make it difficult for the developers to understand who wants to see a suggestion implemented--and who does not want to see a suggestion implemented. Do not clutter the threads trying to debate one another. Remember: You're trying to convince the developers that the suggestion is desirable or undesirable, not each other.
