I agree with Negs here - this system is double penalising. The ECL is already a penalty, plus they have to earn lost xp back under a penalty. Why should they get penalised more? (And no, I don't play an ECL toon)

Alternatively. Think of it as chosing an ecl race being the same as upping the difficulty. Which is not unfair. You get a lot of sweet things from most ecl races (unlike water genasi). So I would actually jump in the boat that says you play in the difficulty you chose, with said consequences attached.
Granted the bug ain't part of that deal.
Just be happy we don't play on servers like sigil that has ecl +12 xD
Can we have kobolds yet? That has to be a negative ecl race xP

Ecl +12 on sigil still requires 1k xp to reach level 2. It has to fight CR 12 creatures to get that xp, though, because ECL still affects combat xp. Gotta say that fighting CR8 with something like 16 hitpoints ECL+8 devil that has one attack per round was already fun. All hail racial damage resistance, str bonus and tower shields.
