Don't make it out to be only opinion, Hera. You made a factual statement. You can survive, as I said, with no skill points at all.

You would be wrong.

There is a difference between surviving and thriving. Skill min/max-ing seem much more important for PvP than for PvE.

skill points are defiantly RP kindling. even a bard with 0 SP's in anything including perform would be able to survive no problem. it would also be hilarious to RP. she would be rude and awkward. very limited scholar. would be distracted easily and not know much about the magic she wields. would be one of the worst singers and unable to carry a tune whatsoever. wouldn't know a magic wand from a spoon. not easy to RP, but would be funny. and still survivable. far from optimal but survivable.

Would I? Are you genuinely saying that one cannot survive without skill points on the server? Seriously?

Having to decide between being a Jack of All trades or a specialist, or a hybrid of the two is intended. Not even my 16 int Rogue 25/SD5 could be a totaly master of all, but had more than enough skills to practically never be caught off guard.

Skills are all about balancing safety net to raw potential. Would you rather wait for when your skills become relevant and come out with excellent results, or would you rather maintain a safety net but lose our savant's potential?

I've a feeling you are thinking entirely PvP when saying you cannot survive without skill pts, because that's the only case being short of skill points ever becomes an issue. Rogues have enough skill points, as I myself said, to afford needing H/MS/UMD without a dent (considering you can easily get 350ish SP as a human/half-elf rogue/SD and 14/25/10/16/8/14 stats). In PvP you want detection. You want intrigue RP and fear getting spied on? Buy a teleportation scroll, and buy one for each your partners if they can use it and teleport all over the place, lose trace and hide in a guild hall or abandoned section of the server and done. You don't need Listen/Spot to do high intrigue, you need to play smart. Ciphers are also very useful.

One can survive without any skill points. You'll have lessened RP power (sense motive, diplomacy, intimidate, bluff, etc), and lessened mechanical power as well (no detection/stealth/tumble/spellcraft/appraise/etc) but its fully doable.

You won't be able to do too much, other than your class benefits and chosen feats. But, your character doesn't magically fall over dead with no skills :D If your character has disintegrated in such a fasion at there mere touch of a mob, its probably a bug!

Deathgrowl is right in this scenario. Skill-points are nice to have. Even essential, towards achieving certain levels of RP or mechanical power. But they are in no way nessecary (as in "you can't live without them, literally").

As for extra skill-points, they would be nice. But as of now, we don't need them imo. All that would happen is DMs would raise DCs to compensate for the extra skillpoints. That is what skillpoint inflation tends to do. Else, DMs would have a bunch of experts in everything on their hands!

The OP's question has been answered and this is starting to drift afield from the question. Feel free to create a new thread for discussing the merits of certain skills vs. others. Preferably in the character building forum.
