It works with crossbows

Max no. of attacks per round a xbowyer can get is 4.

1x Full AB attack.
1x Rapid Reload attack at -5 AB.
1x Rapid Shot attack at Full AB.
1x Haste attack at Full AB.

I haven't tested if you need Rapid Reload for Rapid Shot to work?

I would assume that's how it is, but then again there have been other things that obsidian gave us that say one thing but do another...

In either case it's only a couple levels in, and with the races I can pick from I can't get it right off the bat no matter what. I'll do a test on JEGs sometime to double check the order.

Ok I talked to Xbow expert Truthiness and he said Rapid Shot -does- work with Xbow, but only -after- you have the Rapid Reload feat. In other words you can ignore my ill-informed advice (although early rapid shot may still be useful if you use a sling or bow instead of an xbow, just for ease of levelling).

My first question is whether or not I should get Hide in Plain Sight.

In general, yes, unless you'er building something very unusual.

There are two locations total on the server where cornersneaking is possible. NOn-sneaky rogue is definitely an advanced build due to a low will save. On other hand... having to buy sneaking gear sucks. Prepare to spend roughly 60..90 thousand gold on gear.

Second I was wondering about Open Lock and Disable Device. How much focus should I put into these? Is it worth while to max them out, or is there a point where adding to them is pointless?

It is worthwhile to max them out. There are DC50 locks and traps. They are not very common. You might also want to max search, otherwise you won't notice half of those traps.

I know there are some insane locks on the server, but if it's not worth the effort to open them I'd like to know ahead of time.

That depends on whether your character likes to open locks and disarm traps.

Next I know sneaking is a dexterity skill, but is there any reasonable way to pull it off without using cloth armor? I know we have some spotters all over the server who will see me almost regardless of my equipment, so I'm wondering if there's any wiggle room for a lower dexterity sneaker when it comes to PvE content.

Monsters will stop noticing you at Hide/MS skill of 50, few of them will stop seeing you as low as 30. You can be viable sneaker at dex of 20 (shadowdancer), and you can get HIPS as Ranger or Assassin without dexterity requirement. There were few people on the server able to sneak wearing medium armor, obviously they had lower skills and were easier to spot, but not by characters that had 0 listen/spot skills. Obviously they were gear-dependent. Keep in mind that there are few locations where you will get spotted even with Hide/MS of 80.

If you want high sneak skill, it is a good idea to be able to dual-wield light weapons like daggers or shortsword, due to equipment available. You'll get lower sneak skill with ranged weapons.

Lastly I have a question about crossbow sniper. This has less to do with rogue of course, but since I haven't fully decided on a weapon for my rogue I figured I could fit it here.

I think it is very important, because you'll lose half of bonus damage otherwise, but if you're gonna sneak-attack with the crossbow you might be able to live without it.


Keep in mind that crossbow is restricted to about 3 attacks total. (Rapidshot, Rapid Reload), or 4 if you have access to Haste.

Could do 10 Cavestalker/20 rogue. Think that will give you 48% permenant concealment.

... however no expose weakness. No epic dodge. Which dun seem too nifty either :/

I'd consider crossbow use about as feat intensive as dual wielding (ie you want all the feats). You can of course use a crossbow that gives you one of the feats, but you will probably have difficulties obtaining an epic version.

Depending on rogue build HIPS is not necessary.

Glass cannons would need it true, and it is a convenient escape when the DMs make your rogue life hell in events.
But it is not vital in a rogue build by default.
