They'd need to be gnomish repeating crossbows or you'd get two shots before you had to put one down to reload.
edit: or one of the real-world historical repeating crossbows whose names I can't remember offhand...

Chukonu, the chinese repeater xbow. Useless peasant weapon with minimal range, accuracy and damage potential.

There was a plan to introduce these to BG but it hasn't eventuated yet.

These are the first two epic weapons I ever found. And the shame is I don't even have a character that uses them to their potential.
