Don't browse questionable websites.
Don't load browser middleware (Java, Flash).
Don't open attachments from unknown sources.
Prompt for JScript usage (Cross domain attacks).
HTTPS only browsing.
Incognito and/or TOR for trivial browsing on sites without an account needed.
The list goes on.

Personally, i am running windows defender and malwarebytes.
The difference to the earlier given advice of going the 0$ route is that i have the paid version. Bought it for 2 years i think for the best discount. I ended up to that program after consulting a friend who is somewhat of a computer wizard and had done extensive research on antiviruses themselves and found malwarebytes the best.
Essentially the difference between the free and paid version (in case of malwarebytes) is that the paid version blocks any file or website that attempts to have viruses enter your computer. While i was testing it, most warning windows i've encountered was on "free movie sites" when you open any movie, and some porn sites.
Free version is just a scanner, and will clean your system when you tell it to, but it doesnt always block the things coming in at the point of time 'when' it actually infected your computer.
If you browse only things such as newspaper and youtube, you'll probably be fine with windows defender or other built-in antivirus, but if you ever go to shady sites or just want to be safe, then malwarebytes is one very good option for you.
