This is a fallacy.

Marines (the term is pretty dang old) of the Spanish armada often dressed in cuirasses, their infamous conquistadore helmets and wielded long halberds when preparing for boarding action.

These were common humans who didn't have the superhuman strength and agility of our player characters.

You're both right. One similarity between the cuirasses of Imperial Spain and the lamellar breastplates/scale armour of the Classical world is that the limbs are free to move.

If you fall off a ship while wearing full plate, you're probably tinned crab food.
