Got to be the Baldur Gate series, shadows of Amn if I had to pick one game in the group. Still go back to it every couple years and spend 6 months or so going from Candlekeep all the way to ToB. Great combination of awesome story with strong mechanics. ToB loses some of the great story, but is still good. BG2 though m mixes the best story with really terrific strategy for combat. It's a difficult game that gets easier as you learn to apply different strategies. No other game has captured that difficulty level which also gives a fantastic feeling of accomplishment when you learn to overcome it. Beat the game with a cavalier paladin, elf fighter/ mage/ thief, half - elf ranger/ cleric, dwarf fighter/ cleric, gnome illusionist and half - elf blade over the years worth various modules, different alignments and companions. Don't think we'll ever see such a combination again, unfortunately. Even the newer titles going back to the old infinity engine just don't get the difficulty and need for tactics and strategy right. BGtSCC does bring a lot of the mechanical fun by requiring a high learning curve to take on much of the content and story is brought on by the community. What's missing is content at every level range that really challenges a full 4-6 person party, but even the old BG games can be solo' d when you learn enough about the game.

It's hard because I think there are quite a few games that "got it right". And i am sure I am forgetting one or two.

Everquest 2.
Pros: Big community when it was Sony. Great development realistic models. Great storylines. It, for me, was the perfect creation of a mmorpg. The dev team never revealed the combat formula or they continuously altered it. I loved the math needed when you got to top end. This game really provided the very best a morph could offer.
Cons: trolls. Perhaps too easy when you figure it out. RP is non existent even on rp servers. There was little impact from the admin outside of making the game flawless. There is an evil side and a good side, but the players did not respect this and the admin did nothing to reinforce it. Could have been better for the RP.

Wizardry7.
Pros: game was just fun. Story and characters were solid. As a wizardry fan from past incarnations, this one gave me things that wished for in the other games. I don't think any game ever accomplished the fear of hitting an arrow let like wizardry does.
Cons: the game could bog down from fun to frustrating when you would search for hours for a clue that may be too vague or just not there. It's pushed too far into fantasy sometimes making scenarios very unrealistic.

Diablo 2:
Pros: game is awesome. First time I played it I did so in a 4 day binge where I did not sleep and ate only ordered pizza. It is not an easy game but it is also not hard. Game is balanced perfectly. Every character is totally viable with strengths and weaknesses and strategies needed to learn. Can play every character and feel like you are playing a different game. Hack and slash at its finest.
Cons: malnutrition and sleep deficiency. Horrible community game. Limited character pathing. Puzzles are way too easy.

Planescape: Torment
years before, I bought the box sets to planescape and dove in full bore. The world of dnd opened up big time for me. It was like living in a small room for my whole life and opening a door to whole world outside I never imagined before. I grabbed up the game as soon as I saw it on the shelf. I was a bit older then and no longer played Pnp. But I still had those old boxed sets. This game did not let down.
Pros: everything. Engine was perfect for this type of game. The story had everything, better story than any pc game I had ever played. FF7/8 Are the only games I have ever played that had as good a story and characters. The game was hard from the get and stayed hard the whole time. But not frustrating hard. Challenging. Conversations had an impact but not obviously so. Subtle at times and bigger other times. And finally, Morte.
Cons: hard to think of any. It's a great game. Perhaps if you are unfamiliar with dnd and/or planescape then it might be a bit far reaching and hard to grasp It's wild reality. Last con... Morte.

Not really up the same alley, but I'd have to go with either Mafia (the first one) or Gothic (also the first one).

For me, if I replay a game, then that's a sure shot that it's great for me. Most games bore me even before I reach the end.

I guess NWN 1 and 2 are also high on the list, but I must admit I never finished them ... I always started over before finishing anything, because I then had a new idea of what was fun :-P

Exile series
Peculiar RPG game from niche Spiderweb studio later redoned as Avernum and graphicaly very simmilar to early Ultimas. It was the first game of this type which I ever played, and I didn't had any idea what I was doing at the time, but I had fun anyways. I also dragged alot of inspiration from this game.
if somebody is interested, they are available for free and as Open Source right now: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html

Myst
Point and click, a mother of few game genres. Intriguing, imaginative and rather difficult adventure puzzle game where you can't really depend on your blind luck. Took me 3,5 year to beat it :P With pauses of course and without any walkthrough guides or anything. Such times, no internet ;)

Heroes III
Played it so much to the point of not wanting to play it anymore :D

TES: Morrowind
Do I even need to explain? :) Besides of Diablo this was the first game where I learned to be a collector. All my houses were filled with weapon and armor trophies including each and every artifact possible to find, altough I admit that I cheated and checked where to find some, but I did anyways.

Fallout 1,2
If I could only count how many times and in how many ways I managed to get through those titles :P

Legacy of Kain series
Time travel, time loops, paradoxes and vampires. Intriguing to the very core this adventure game has everything from amazing story through smooth gameplay to very intriguing characters. Sadly it was very badly translated from console to PC, but I managed somehow. Main heroes also appeared in Tomb Raider: Guardian of the Light, but they were merely shadows of themselves.
Right now on sale: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?t ... cy+of+kain

Papers Please A Dystopian document thriller
You are a passport inspector in fictitious communistic country of Arstotzka. Your job is to check passports and other entry papers of people comming through your border checkpoint. Very quickly this game becomes real, you get to know stories and problems of some people and it is up to you to let them in or not. Every choice has it's repercussions, some very serious for yourself. Needless to say this game has around 20 endings.

Page 2 and only one Ultima game mentioned?

Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Ultima VII: Serpent Isle were and are amazing games. The innovation the Ultima series brought are staples now in games. Sadly, Origin Games fell to the innovation killer known as EA.

Ultima Underworld 1 and 2: Play Ultima Underworld 1, then play Wolfenstein 3D. Underworld came out 3 months before Wolfenstein 3D and it is better on so many levels but most people will remember Wolfenstein. If you liked the Underworld games like me, then you probably also know about this upcoming game made by many of the same team; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underworld_Ascendant

Avernum is being remade again... the first two games are out and the 3rd is coming early next year. That the exile series has been redone 3 times shows how good a game it is. One of my favorites for sure, i rp my character as having come from that setting via a teleportation accident.

http://www.avernum.com/avernum3/index.html Cant wait for next year.

Virus, Elite, Frontier: Elite 2 and Fallout 1 and 2. Baldur's Gate and Shadows of Amn were great too. And I enjoyed Torment a lot.

Hard to pick just one when there has been so many different eras in games and my life.
-Ms pacman & donkey Kong when I could barely reach the arcade controller.
-double dragon elbowing my way through the game with one Quarter.
-Contra and super Mario bros-thanks for the Nintendo mom.
-final fantasy, the first. The game that sent me here.
((Although not favs. I'll give honerable mention to donkey Kong country and Mario cart ...so fun while high))
-fallout 1 & 2 - a kiss to build a dream on is still stuck in my head.
-halflife team fortress classic...so many hours...so many hours....
-Baldurs Gate series. Naturaly
-bloodlines...I'm doing a playthrough with tremere right now coincidently enough.
-neverwinter nights 1 and 2 for the persistent worlds
-for the age of mmo's I will say Rifts only because of the legendary pvp guild I was a member of.
- now I'm hanging out with you guys until the next Era happens. ..vr?

Ultima 6 & 7 because they were my first major RPG's, and I have so many fond memories of them as a kid.

Diablo 1: Could not stop playing this as a kid. And then getting involved in the online community was a big deal for me when I was young.

Mechwarrior 2, because stompy robots are awesome, this was my first experience playing a game over the internet with other people.

Gothic II: A game that let you do anything. The world in this felt so alive and explorable, I don't think I even played much of the story, I just enjoyed the living world in it. Was way ahead of its time back when it came out.

Baldur's Gate: MY first foray into anything D&D related. Opened up a whole new world to me.
