I recall posting an answer to this when it was brought up before, but it seems lost in the past so I guess I'll have to write this the hard way!

IIRC I was against having an RPotM concept back then and I'm still against it now, mostly because I've been in PWs with that system in place, and if it's run by DMs it inevitably leads to DM favouritism, and if it's run by players it becomes a popularity contest.

One player may be selected, but what about the other players who roleplayed just as well as the winner and didn't make the cut because they play during off-hours or were under the radar in some way, they're not well-liked by the people voting for them, or something else? Why don't they deserve the award as well? Why are they disqualified for factors that have nothing to do with the quality of their roleplay? You can say "we can have multiple RPotM winners, then!" but in order to nominate someone you have to know about them in the first place, so people who don't make a big brouhaha will still be left behind.

Finally, how do you even begin to measure "quality of their roleplay"?

I think it is a bad idea.

It is not a competition and shouldn't be.

This could encourage rule lawyering, eletism, and criticizing character's of others.

It is a great way to make community toxic.

While well-meaning and certainly something that can work among friends or small groups, such a system will just end up breeding elitist behaviour and headache for everyone involved on a server of our size. We already had serious favouritism and clique-ism in the past, let's not go back there, aye?

i agree with the op and do not think that this would be so bad. its not that big of a deal. it wilol be for the person that wins, but i doubt there will be a huge line of pitchforks if your name is not on the trophy.

i also wanted to agree with all those that PMd me. yes i should win this every week, but i do not think it would be fair.. every other week.. that seems fair.

Aaron's so good he wins a monthly award with a limit of one per year every other week...

I say 'meh', if there were such a thing I likely wouldn't vote (even when I am actually in game consistently). However, I wouldn't be upset about it's existence either. We have already published that staff get awards and no one has started a flame war over that. Pretty much everyone is happy with the "Thread of infinite appreciation" so I would see it as unneeded and something that folks wouldn't necessarily pay much attention to.

My advice would be to start out a thread to allow people to nominate RP'er of the month, with no award, just nominations. Those players with the top 5 nominations in the thread get voting options added and whoever gets the most votes wins (no award). If after a few months it's popular enough approach Admins and HDMs to ask if they'd be willing to take a look at providing a small in game award for winning RPotM. I imagine their willingness will be in direct relation to what they see over the 'beta phase'... If the same 5 names are being voted on every month it would not likely receive a great deal of consideration, but if it spawns lots of RP stories from many different players and shows inclusion/involvement from a large portion of the server then my guess is they'd be very open to expanding upon the idea.
