And people tell me the forums aren't full of "MAKE PERMADEATH MANDATORY!"

I guess I'm not as paranoid as people called me out to be? Not even a month passed.

I think the above shows my opinion for the first three quarters of the suggestion. However, I do like the idea of "unconscious" unless dead for normal falls.

To comment on the "120 damage HP hit" - damage and HP does not mean injury. HP means your ability to AVOID injury. A 120 damage hit is a strike that is incredibly difficult to turn into a flesh wound or deflect in an exhausting manner. A 120 damage hit will behead a commoner. A dwarf getting a 120 damage hit in the face would tank it with their helmet, deflecting the blow at cost of some concussion making another such blow more likely to knock them out.

Regarding player freedom, problem is the moment one player's freedom infringes on another's, you can bet that the victim will cry foul and blame the DM team of favoritism. There is no DM who is immune to that accusation despite proof of otherwise, and thus no DM wants to deal with that bullshit. It's safer to just deny such requests.

As for skills - yes! But please for the love of all that is holy keep it reasonable and well defined. I really hate it when a DM defines DCs not by source books (even accounting for modifiers) but by "challenge" i.e: "DC to do (easy task your char does every day with no confounding factors making it harder in this case) is your HD + 10 + 4"

A character belongs only to their player, and only them. And only the player may decide what happens.
