Regarding PC Trainers,
In Star Wars Galaxies, before the dreaded Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancements, levelling was done based on skill trees and not a centralised "level tracker."
Each new skillbox required specific relevant experience and also being trained by either an NPC or a player. Getting trained by an NPC was too expensive for most new players, so they went to be taught by PCs, inspiring a stronger community.
To entice veterans to do it, mastering a particular profession tree required teaching experience.
Perhaps if PC trainers are introduced, could a similar mutually beneficial system be introduced?
