I fixed two chests this way.
Just left click the chest and as your character goes to use it, hit the A and D keys and the lid shuts.

Easiest thus far:
Stand immediately next to the troublesome chest/bag. Click (as if looting) and IMMEDIATELY backup with the keyboard. I usually get it on the first or second try.
Also the OP is "the man!" for posting this.
