stats go up 1 every 4 levels so in 8 levels you can learn a language and you say you can spend that time rping learning said language, so if i take wiz/sorc/rog/druid/cleric/any other class with a language at level 8... how can you not apply the same reasoning? same for DM granted

how is one method suddenly so different than another when talking about the same outcome
The situation is that the mechanics don't support a progressive learning process of percentage—your PC either knows something, like a Feat or Language, or they don't.

A PC cannot for example half-Expose Weakness a foe, nor have half-fluency of a Language.

Yes, the Character Sheet is an amalgamation of disparate things in order to provide a chance of success toward Action, but not in regard to Language.

Thus, with limited mechanical means in/with the Engine, of progressive learning is not possible, the artificial construction of attainment at greater Class investment, sorta kinda maybe gives a sense of achievement in the specific Class-based regard.

INT and Language learning is another aspect that I'm not entirely disagreeing with, IF there was possiblity to better RP the learning/training process.

The INT languages have always been a bit awkward, but less awkward than many other constructs.

My low class super-sharp (high INT) Rogue who's never before left the Gate shouldn't know more than the base, whereas my well-travelled wild elf thug, with his lower INT, should know a few more. The Foreigner background helps, but doesn't balance it. However, my know-it-all Sun Elf Wizard knows plenty of languages, and should.

Further, how does it adapt? My Druid has been trying to pass through a Kobold warren south of the Gate peacefully practically daily (to deal with the Outsiders and Abberants below) - wouldn't he pick up a few phrases of Yipyak or Draconic over time? Neither being languages he was much exposed to before getting to the Gate.

So it's not a perfect construct. But what would be cleaner? A Language skill, where you pick a language for every 2 skill points? You're picking up languages at a very odd pace that way. Feat choices? Far too costly. Narratively? How do you do that fairly.

Nothing I suppose in light of current server setup.
