Yeah, this is true that Northlander Hewing should not work with unarmed attacks. The icon itself has a big hewing axe on it. But since you can two-hand medium sized weapons, the feat was not restricted to just large weapons, and then you got the small races and what they consider as their 'large and medium' weapons, and at that point... Is it really so hard to imagine someone using a dagger, and stabbing someone else in a hewing motion?

And then... Well, since it at one point maximized the unarmed damage dice, 3d10 or something, the feat Became a must have feat for pretty much every single Monk build that there was. People RCR-ed their Monk builds to get it. So a lot of people were using it. Then the feat was changed, and it should still work very well for the 'hewing' punches of a strength based Monk.
