I am planning on an alternative item damage system, which would be used for rust monsters and Sunder actions. This was meant for the combat patch, but had to be delayed until after the patch due to the amount of work needing done. The new system will simply make a destroyed item unequippable until repaired, rather than deleting it.
Would a rust monster affect alchemical silver weapons? What about Mithril? I ask because as you know real life rust only affects metals that contain iron, like steel, and I don't know what "alchemical silver" is. Is it some kind of silver/iron alloy made possible through alchemy? Or is it silver hardened some other way?
Just thinking that if rust monsters cant affect mithril then mithril weapons would become worth having on your character as a spare, especially for dex builds. There are no wooden weapon finesse weapons.
By 3.5e pnp logic (rules as written) it has an attack that causes any non-magical metal weapon to dissolve automatically and any magical metal weapon with a reflex DC of 17 (vs 1d20 + constitution modifier) to resist the destruction or also be dissolved. This will happen regardless of the metal type.
Also by pnp logic, striking the monster with any metal weapon (magical or nonmagical) will immediately corrode the weapon with no chance to resist (-1 to damage permanently and irreversibly, weapon is destroyed if it reaches -5). This will also happen regardless of the metal type.
However the general consensus among staff does seem to be that this is considered unfair for our general PVE environment so beyond Rhifox's future system I'll probably do something to the current script to apply a temporary debuff to the weapon instead of permanently destroying it. No promises as to what (or when) will be done since our main priority right now is getting the big combat patch out. In the mean time players should stay away from this thing if they don't want to risk a chance of losing their weapon.

Could you remove the monster until a less severe version of it is done? It's in an out of the way place but I'd hate for people unaware of this thread lose a wespon like i did just cause they, like me, wondered what's down there
You could put a sign up in game in that room that reads "Rust Monster out to lunch, returning in future update"
If you need me to find out the exact area name I will be online around 8:30 or so EST, I can send a stealther armed with a club
As one could easily remove your armor and weapon, use a plain club/fists or shoot it from afar. Or even run away.
Would love to see many more of them spawning at unexpected places!
The possible loss of an epic weapon is bad sure, but that's another consequence of removing the item level restriction.
Before that a player couldn't use an epic weapon with his low-level char in a CR10 area, so any possible loss would have been much less painful.
Since nwn1 this is the only creature I fear lol I remember a group of my buddies back in the day playing the Eye of the Beholder mod and the floor with rust monsters had us each running for our equipment lol funny stuff..one of us running in one direction, another guy running in another direction both with rust monsters on our heels. It was funny they were easy to kill its just we didnt want our weapons or gear turning to rust.

That one rust monster never was a problem at all.

Theodore has a point, in that we as players approach this game world environment with little fear or regard for what out toons are ACTUALLY facing. We use OOC logic to support our lootz-grindz-killz-minez! attitude, and when it "hurts," we stomp our feet and vigorously shake our clenched fists up and down.
Why in the world should the PvE environment be fair?!?
Its a heart breaking matter in truth yes losing something costly in such away. But steve does got a point as well. Its similar to my complaint with some peoples rp when people ain't mindful of what their doing, there's consequence to their actions. This is Forgotten Realms last I recall, many players like to throw lore down other peoples throats, but tend to neglect the monsters compendium. I for one if seen a Rust monster imma GTFO. I rather fight red dragons knowing imma die. In pnp or other past dnd mods or games one of the sure IC signs is walking upon a dungeon level with rusted equipment ic swords armor etc everywhere. That put players on edge and was fun really. All the sudden people pull out wooden clubs and used rusted gear from the ground etc.
Flatted does got a point too, for the folks that are unaware, or oblivious to more in-depth knowledge of the game setting, perhaps some sign to give warning could be warranted as well. Sota like how some lore info pops up in the combat box when you walk upon certain areas.*You see rusted armor's and swords of all makes scattered about the floor. Some rumors have told about a creature turning any metal it touches to rust etc* That would prevent the "Ah XXXX" moments. And having that feel of simply logging off or rage quitting after the fact. We want to encourage people to play not chase them away.
Not to sound messed up but Im just trying to keep it reasonable , people can spend hours if not days in discussion of class feats to be in sync with pnp. Why must monsters get treated differently? ijs.

I have almost zero FR knowledge except what I've learned here and in one nwn 1 server. My PnP history is exclusively Ravenloft, a place not known for its rust monsters. There are also players with no previous experience with dnd at all. I was under the vague impression that magical weapons were immune, and also that it probably wouldn't destroy my sword because that would not be in the servers usual standards for non dm oversite encounters. I was wrong on both counts.
