Re: Scheduling server resets
I only reset the server if I think the remaining uptime is not sufficient to cover an event duration. I honestly like how things are now. The more the server resets, the more difficult it is for me as a DM to make sure setup persists for longer events. But tbf, Dabest has alleviated that concern signifiicantly.

Re: Scheduling server resets
I've personally not noticed a correlation between server uptime and performance. To me, it seems lag spikes hit at weird (unpredictable) times. A good for instance happened just a bit ago. I logged in as the server had just been up 30 minutes. About 15 minutes later, I got a lag spike so bad I figured it was a crash. (And it wasn't my fault! All my TKL songs are stored away, and not in my inventory!)
Historically, the server has had various times of reset. We were down to 6 hours per reset at one point, and up to 12 hour resets at one point. Then of course, there were times it didn't matter the reset period, you could count on the server crashing about once per hour.
I'm ok with a 9 hour reset myself. I do think it would be nice to have scheduled resets that weren't "every day at x time". They could be scheduled every 10 hours (or 8, or 9), that way they are predictable, but not resetting during a person's RP time every single day.
I'm assuming that if there were regularly scheduled resets, that these resets would still happen even if the server had crashed a bit before?

Re: Scheduling server resets
I refer to those as "timed resets". A scheduled reset would be one that happens at the same time every day. We would try to time these to occur at off-peak hours. Ideally we could go 24h without a reset without performance issues, so we can reset during our lowest-activity time. It would be a consistent inconvenience for those players, but it'd inconvenience the fewest possible people total, and be far fewer than it is now. (Although they'd also reap the benefits of a fresh reset, such as a free teleport through the Nexus, etc.)JustAnotherGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:16 pm I'm ok with a 9 hour reset myself. Yes, the idea would be that if the server had reset within 2-3 hours or something of a scheduled reset, it would skip that reset. This window would depend on how reliable the server was and what the longest time we could run it without degraded performance. Between the two servers, I think we've only had 3-4 crashes in the past month, so it's not a very common occurrence anymore.JustAnotherGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:16 pm I'm assuming that if there were regularly scheduled resets, that these resets would still happen even if the server had crashed a bit before?
