Afaik a sorceress won't get very far. The old posts about necro school should give a fairly good idea about how it works. Although old I believe they're still relevant lore-wise.
Off the top of my head, a sorc couldn't really climb as a mage within the school, but could in the militant arm of the school. Bleh it's been so long >.< tad hazy on the details.
Which school did your sorc become a member of?
Nyx Keres - The White Mage Sugo Schrew - Traitorous Deep Gnome Antas'aere Teken'dar - Deep in study at the School of Necromancy Andrid Severi - Died from the Amnian plague
Lvling up in the UD is diabolical!. Ok you have that two lvl cap but to make things worse, before you have even reached lvl2, your XP get reduced as if you have earned a number of XP points that would be equal to lvl2 of another race.
I'm thinking of playing half drow just to make things easier.

The staff is considering implementing changes to make things easier as far as I know.
Mind telling me what class you are leveling? It's often far easier once you know a thing or two.

Bard and I have added a level of Rogue which I'm regretting.

That's nasty... perhaps even harder than pure wizard at first levels. If your UMD is enough, try buying scorching ray scrolls (a lot) and using on beetles and perhaps even displacers. Displacers will be hard without them, but maybe you can pull if off if you use stealth to sneak them first. A party member or summon (the scrolls for level 1 summons may be cheap as well, not sure) would help you get sneak attack mid-fight through flanking.
Most importantly, do *not* die. Keep cure potions/scrollls/heal_kits with you constantly. And if you see a high level in the scry tool try PMing for some help, it can generate interesting RP as well. Also, I would recommend keeping some gold for consumables at first and not waste it at once on enchanted gear.
Displacers have 21 HP so be careful, you might want to try the goblins South of varalla's first. And *always* do quests. Invisibility(you need at least 10 minutes of it I would say) allows you to run 3 quests for over 3k exp every 5 days.

One advice: use gold wisely. Buy potions with spells on them. Consider yourself lucky if you got pack of potions of invisibility. And never ever say about how it is hard. Because it is player's choice if he has chosen race or class to play with, that is why he should stick to his choice responsibly or just delete and try again.

Some classes are hard to level to level in the UD and that is a fact. Sorry if it seemed that way, I never meant to advise against playing a class, especially when I play an equally hard to level one as well.
It's just that not every class can solo like a cleric or FS or a warlock, and some people might want to be aware of that when playing down there.

Of course, situation on server in UD area tends to pull you into the solo runs. So what? Find time at which certain players appear and play in that time. Solo play is never an answer on everything. If you always solo on the server, what's the point of playing online?

I dont mind a little solo play every now and then, and in fact if you dont enjoy it every now and then.. i wouldnt play in the UD. Acting like the player base in the UD isnt more dispersed doesnt make it true, a fact that everyone that plays down there finds out eventually.
I dont think its such a bad thing. When you run into others there is actual real RP, 95% of the time. Opposed to the surface where its a lot more hit or miss.
Each area has their upsides. Population is not one of the UDs.

True, Broham2 has a solid point. If everyone stopped playing everytime they had the feeling they were almost alone in the UD, that place would be constantly empty.
And I am happy to say that it is not right now, there are people playing and some even stick around long enough to form a solid presence. I myself try to stay around as long as possible even when I am the only one in the UD, that increases the chances of actually meeting someone to RP or party with, and if people put up the same effort it's not so bad down there.
I just takes some faith I guess, people start gathering when they see others playing too.

I've been playing for 2 weeks, EVERYDAY, in the UD now and I can say that partying there is sparse. Most of those I've come in contact with are low levels and the partying is 1% for RP purposes, and 70% to attempt staying alive for 5 minutes and 29% body retrieval. There is a lot of lore to this servers UD but who's playing it out? There are a lot of people who are very good at RP, but for myself making any kind of, hopefully persistent, RP with 1 or 2 other players is a challenge.
I ran into a PC named Azzur, i believe it was, and had an introductory 10 min DM interaction which was nice(TY to those involved), but other than that all we see in the UD are DM shout about surface events. It doesn't help me want to "stick-it-out".
Just a thought, but maybe, maybe, considering the make-up and lore of Sshamath, making access to the surface easier might liven things up. Just a thought.
That - accessing the surface with ease - will never happen. That subject has been broached a number of times and by all indications the pathway to the surface will remain very difficult and the ability to operate on the surface will be significantly curtailed.
Eldebryn has started a trading guild. I am not certain how far it has gotten off the ground at this point, but you may be able to find assistance there if you knock on the door.
My epic Drow has founded an organization called the Enlightened Hand -- so far it has two members and both are my characters Ha! The Hand is looking to recruit useful sorts in the Underdark. If you are deemed open-minded and talented enough, the Hand will support you with both funds as well as magical wards and possibly even some trinkets.
For various reasons I have drastically reduced my presence on the server but feel free to send me a PM and I will gladly meet you in-game and give you some form of assistance regardless of whether you are interested in cooperating with the Hand or not.
Feel free to send tells to either Guilhem or Alienor any time.
And in spite of any comments to the contrary, feel free to complain, vent, and seek assistance on the forums, after all that is what they are for.

@nwnolan,
I currently play May'riia Baen'Urden. I also am trying to get a warlock going, but getting to 6000xp with 6 or 11 hp is upsetting. The first thousand isn't so bad at increments of 50xp per beetle, but after that first thousand xp it drops to 25xp per. That's 200 beetles, again, with 6-11 hp. Even if you have pots and h.kits you still get one-shotted quite often. I'm gonna say add another 6-7 hundred xp, which might be conservative depending on class, to get to lvl2. For some people this can take days, and I hope I'm not joining a server that looks down on those who can't commit 4-8 hrs a day, or don't know all the tricks and builds "so too bad".
I think maybe more "get to know Sshamath's layout and UD outskirts" quests would help a lot.
@Kenshin,
Thank you for your offer and you help in game. I look forward to seeing you in the UD in the future.
What if there was a "second created char must be drow" clause? ...I don't know... I'm tired...
