But what IS that reason? So curious, especially considering that they can get their hide tanned and pegged to a prison wall for this.

LOL there is nothing the authorities can do about this. Unless they got lucky and stumbled upon the person doing this for some other crime. The really crappy part is that many hacker groups do this for pocket change. They take money from others to ruin days like ours. Just accept it and move on. They eventually get tired of this and move on for a few months. We usually get about 3 months of no attacks then a month or so of them.

Well we could spend all day guessing at motive. It could be that an admin or DM decision upset them at some point in the past, or they were banned for some offense and they are still angry about it, or they just want to take down the most populous NWN2 server, or they have a personal dislike for someone among the player base or server staff. Whatever drives them, it doesn't really matter, as their end goal is just to ruin everybody's fun.

We'll do what we can to combat the threat, as BG:TSCC has weathered similar storms in the past and none of us are in the habit of giving up. But I would suggest everyone find something else to occupy their Saturday, as at the moment the attack is pretty intense. And while I'm trying to mitigate it, I don't expect I'll be able to relaunch the server in the near future.

I was thinking, would an IP filter help here? I remember we had one on our old server, essentially you had to register IP address with your account on webpage so that the server would communicate with you. Well you do have to change it every time your IP changes but that's question of 1-2 minutes.

You know what's double-awesome? Having my Mac update to the latest OS, which in turn causes my Crossover-Bottle NWN2 to no longer work, so that I have to reinstall NWN2, so that I can download the haks, etc. all over again. . . from a server that is under attack. I am well-pleased.

(And yep, I've downloaded what I can from the Google drive )
