If you take the improved familiar feat the list is expanded and depending on your alignment you'll have access to Imps, Faerie Dragons, Pseudo Dragons. Stirge for everyone. They have a bit more HP and AC than the classic familiars.

Do you have to take improved familiar at wizard level 1, or can you change familiar later?

If I take cavestalker levels now will the changes from the update be automatically applied or will I need to RCR?

(...) is there any existing RP in game around these guys? The description is pretty generic and I don't recall them being associated with an actual deity (it says fire and destruction so Kossuth maybe?). Just wondering if there was lore to understand/know before playing one?

Black Flame Zealot

A secret society of holy slayers devoted to the worship of Kossuth, the Order of the Black Flame is the hidden blade of the Firelord's faith in Thay. Trained in the rites of Kossuth's temple, the Black Flame zealots use stealth, divine magic, and the zeal of fanaticism to destroy those who have given offense to the Lord of Flames. Even the mighty zulkirs are not above Kossuth's wrath, since the Order is a sanctioned and respected means for wealthy and powerful Thayans to pursue vendettas.

The description from Kaedrin's class pack is pretty much a more 'generic' rewording of the very specific FRCS prestige class, as to let it be used in other settings if wanted. When joining the server a month or so ago, I was actually surprised to see Red Wizards and Thayan Knights restricted, but the Black Flame Zealots to not be, since they swing from the same neck of the woods.

The improved familiar feat can be taken as a regular feat anytime during level up, not necessarily at level 1. As for changing familiars you can bind a new familiar once per day using the Bind familiar feat (that is granted for free).

This means that after the update applied, the Cavestalker PC will, at login, be promoted to gain spells at their new, higher CL?

For example my current Druid 10 Cavestalker 6 has spell profession at 10 (14 with PSC). After the update, they'll be CL 16 but also gain 6 levels of spell progression. That's a lot of new spells!

But one issue is that some Builds will need to divest of Practised Spellcaster Feat, and that might require an RCR to comply with Server Rules.

We kept the general description on this server to allow for more open RP since BFZ is the only divine/rogue type PRC (divine seeker doesn't count says it doesn't require or advance spellcasting).

Many possibilties there, maybe they can take a new class they didn't think about before or more levels of cavestalker ? I doubt there are that many cavestalkers around so just ask a DM to help you I guess

In that case, would it make any sense to potentially rename the prestige class to something more generic along with the other changes to the class in the patch (much in the same fashion and under the same reasoning that Neverwinter Nine got renamed to Bodyguard) as to avoid confusion? In the context of the Forgotten Realms, the Order of the Black Flame seems about as specific as the Fire Knives, Shadow Thieves, or Night Masks in terms of recognizably. Maybe something along the lines of 'Destruction's Devout', 'Zealous Stalker', or 'Shank-Happy Shish-kabober'?

Ok, so heard about this last night and person who told me must have misunderstood it. Took it as a force to make monks move at normal speed, not a toggle on toggle off type thing. This is a good idea will even help rp with my barbarian. Thumbs up.
