Humans lay on the grassy hills off the road named Thundar's Ride. Massive wounds expose the flesh of the dying men. Men bleeding over the long grass, wet from the morning dew. Now soaked in their own blood.

The chieftain looks down at the dying man...

"The lands of men, elf and dwarf will gather. But they will not gather for vengeance or conquest. No. They will gather to pay tribute. A tribute we will take. A tribute of blood."

This morning, adventurers visiting the Skulldask cave encountered a horrifying sight. A chained, tortured man was found rotting in a puddle of his own dried blood. An orcish clan symbol was carved at his scarred chest.

There is no doubt that this bloody sacrifice is related to yesterday's carnage at Thundar's ride.

Adventurers heading out from Soubar to the cave next to Boarsky Bridge would find the body of a dead man in the center of a sacrificial circle with a fatal stab wound on his chest. There isn't any kind of orcish symbols on the man, instead a circle was carved on his chest.

Scorched earth and blood pools scatter across the broken wolf plains. The gods embrace the pain created in vengeance and hunger. Not a hunger of food, but a hunger of violence.

A debt of eons past.

A tribute on the doorstep.

It would be a few days later until a shadowed form, an occasional wayfarer in that particular cave, would happen upon whatever remained of the corpse and the remnants of the ritual performed upon it.

Darkened eyes stared for some time in the sunless passage at what had transpired. Then they, too, disappeared.

The Commander of the Northern Watch would be seen departing the Bridgefort at first light, riding hard to the southeast. Given her pace, it seemed a matter of some urgency.

This grim morning a public execution was performed at the town of Soubar. A tortured body of a female drow in black and red clothes was left rotting at the gallows. This hideous deed was performed by a couple of another drow who accused the victim of heresy, but the rumors say that those drow were accompanied by an orc, and three letters — Z. U. K. — were carved at the back of the so-called heretic. Mag herself was watching this scene, but did not interfere.

A truly bad omen for the North, more troublesome than those before it.

Rumors speak of a disagreement in Soubar earlier this evening. The sort of mix up that leaves one party face-down in the dirt, cold and stiff and bloodied...
Here is how the story goes..

A small band of orcs were spotted roaming the village.
They spoke in hushed tones and seemed to be looking at the state of the walls and what few proper buildings were present.
As the pair lingered just South of the merchant area, Baron Nightgale himself made his way near to them as he spoke with a nearby merchant.

The larger of the orcs, known by locals as Grishnak, stepped forward.
They exchanged words; their tension palpably visible to any witnesses.
A few denizens nearby enough to overhear say that the black orc goaded and provoked the mercenary Captain to single combat.

Grishnak then withdrew to a more suitable location for a fight, notably -away- from the Ebon Blade fortress looming to the North.

Both combatants prepared themselves, and as sudden as a bolt of lighting, the melee began.
Steel on steel. Orc against man. The deafening clang of life-or-death swordplay rang out among the village as the two clashed in mortal combat.
After being knocked back and badly wounded by a mighty hew of grishnak's enchanted blade, Greil vanished using sorcery.. The orc champion roared his outrage and named the Baron a coward, only to have the crafty mercenary re-appear almost on top of him, fully healed and re-invigorated, delivering his own series of fell strikes. Sheer size and brute strength won out over precision and guile as the large orc batted the human back with his shield, sending him flying into the mud. This gave him enough time to recover and set upon his hated foe with renewed fury.

Greil took many wounds fighting his way to his feet, and though Grishnak was bleeding from a dozen cuts himself.. he would not relent. He rained down blows that cracked like thunder as they battered Greil's shield and armor.
The Baron fell one last time, and was pinned there by the orc chief, too weak to resist him.

They spoke briefly then.
To his credit, Greil was defiant to the end, and kept his dignity, if not his life.
The orcish warrior spoke these last words to the man "When you meet your God, tell him Grishnak sent you" before burying his blade into Nightgale's skull. . .

The fallen was briefly set upon by a hungry worg belonging to Bar'amundi, another orc rising to prominence in the North.
The small orc band, wise enough to know better than to stick around near to the Blades' fortress after such a heinous act, quickly left the village via the Southern gate.

The dead man's remains are said to have gone missing a short time later.
Whatever fate befell him remains to be seen..

After a horse runs alone to Soubar and an expected wagon of grain does not arrive any who would go to check the route for the fate of the caravan would find the signs of a pitched battle on the Northern Tradeway.

The bodies of half a dozen caravan guards lay dead amid the signs of a bloody fight. The wagon, which was carrying a two month supply of stored grain, left a trail of large foot prints and wheel tracks away from the battle site in the direction of Uruk Lurra.

The Treacherous Tradeway

Image

The treachery of the Tradeway reared it's ugly head once again as a supply wagon driven from Corm Orp to Soubar broke down on the Northern Tradeway. Hearing of the bandit attacks on the Tradeway, they sent extra guards to guard the wagon carrying three barrels of grain. As the driver and guards attempted to fix the broken wheel, a small band of Orcs came upon it and surrounded it. The guards attempted to plead with the Orcs to let them through, this grain was to feed their families. But the Orcs intimidated them and wanted the grain, the wagon and even the horse for themselves.

The guards had no choice but to try and fight them off, to no avail. When the fighting broke out, the horse that was unhooked while they tried to fix the wheel, took off for Soubar at a harried sprint. The Orcs proceeded to slaughter the small band of guards and took the wagon for themselves.

With no horse they pushed the wagon as far as they could towards Uruk Lurra until it couldn't fit through the rocky terrain and decided to smash the wagon up for fire wood and carry the 3 barrels the rest of the way in. They now have about a 2 month supply of grain for the Village and additional fire wood for the fires.

Rumors about the recent incident at Boareskyr Bridge fill the air. A mixed company of elves, humans and dwarf has met an orc to pay a ransom for the woman he kidnapped few days ago. The sides failed to come to an agreement though, and the negotiation process has turned into a fierce battle. Not much is known about the outcome, but it seems that everyone made it alive in the end, and the kidnapped woman has disappeared, her location remains unknown.

After some months of silence and stillness from the Fortress of the Holy Anvil, now, Stout feet are heard rumor to be venturing out from within the Kingdom of Kraak Helzak, where trade caravans are newly received and sent, and where some earth works are begun...rumored to be a rebuilding of defenses and more, after the Troll War of recent memory.

Travelers coming into contact Kraak Helzak citizens and caravans may be queried for recent news, perhaps offers in trade a rare and fine Dwarvish ale in return for solid gains in local lore concerning the regions that adjoin to the Troll Claw Hills. It would be clear to the more cunning individual that the Dearves of Kraak Helzak pay particular note to trade lines both established and broken...and even more focused attention to the rumors of Orcish expansion within the North.
