Rumor spreads of a hulking bearded man covered in hides causing a disturbance in various towns.
The object of his attention is someone by the name of Maria Milton.
The savage seems hell bent on finding her by any means.

Soubar - 2nd of Ches, Dawn ...

A clarion horn sounds from within the small castle straddling the North wall, and shortly thereafter a gaggle of sleepy troops make their way out into the misty dawn.

Sergeant Tytos Lyonson of the Ebon Blade awaits, and he calls out to them from his vantage point on the gallows.
"Don your armor and take up your weapons; today we train and make ready for war."
The man motions to two crates at the base of the gallows, then makes his way down as the militia prepares for the day.

As the tendrils of mist melt away in the early morning sun, a sharp-eyed person might count their number at fifteen, not including the officer. They would don shirts of fine mail and steel helms, with dark cloaks about their shoulders, and sturdy leather boots upon their feet. Their weapons range from spears to crossbows and handaxes, and some would carry shields as well.

Tytos has them form up into a basic formation then leads them about the village on a first patrol, stopping often to speak with the locals. This is both an attempt to gleam information, as well as to familiarize the villagers and militia with one another, as some militiamen are new arrivals to Soubar.
The training then begins in earnest.

The militia mans a section of the villages' walls that remains intact. Straw targets had been placed earlier at three varying distances afield. Tytos would then instruct the troops on the use of their crossbows.
They fire at the targets for well over an hour before moving onto melee training.

Basic form is taught for both spear and axe, as well as the fundamentals of defense and how to properly make use of their armor and shields. They drill for an hour, then spar with each other to test what they've learned.
This lasts for some time, with Sergeant Tytos carefully overseeing the bouts, and tending to any injured with bandage and healing magics.

Finally, he leads the exhausted men on one final patrol, this time circling outside of the villages' ruined walls.
He bids them to familiarize themselves with the lay of the land, for their lives and the fate of Soubar may very well depend on it.
They then return to the Ebon Blade fort, and many are seen that evening within the Winding Way tavern.
By the quantity of drink inbibed, one might surmise that they'd been paid after the patrol.
Tytos is with them as they drink.

A pair of figures could be spotted, eyes glowing hauntingly as they moved carefully through Soubar, hoods pulled down against the moonlight.

They stop near the fortress of the Ebon Blades and exchange a few words with an armored man a full head taller than either of them. The armored man ushers them inside.

The patience of on lookers and erstwhile spies would be tested as nothing but the usual changing of the guards graces the fort's doors until finally two Ebon Blade mercenaries lead six ragged looking personages out, chained together expertly.

The procession comes to a halt near Bart's caravan stop where they are met by the figures from before, who must have exited some other way from the forts labyrinthine interior.

Few words are exchanged, perhaps an errant "fare thee well", and soon the armored mercenaries return to their abode. The remainder, however, would set off South of Soubar to places as yet unknown

A wearing a skull mask could be seen putting up several notes on the notice board in Soubar.

Those traveling the Boareskyr Bridge out of Soubar would notice humiliated men in various states of crucifixion upon improvised crosses. There is evidence their worldly possessions were heaped together and burned in a small bonfire.

Ability: Track
Hidden: show
There has been a bloody skirmish in the area. It seems one man - a large human or a half-orc in plated sabatons - fought outnumbered but prevailed. He had dismounted for the battle and, after the executions, mounted a heavy horse to ride north through Soubar, Corm Orp and on to Darkhold. There is evidence a barefoot female tried to escape the battle but was captured and, it seems, taken with him as a prisoner.
DC 11 Lore: Local
Hidden: show
These men could easily be identified as lawless highwaymen who were locally known to have resorted to banditry.
DC 21 Lore: Local
Hidden: show
It may be a little more difficult to find someone willing to gossip on rumors of who was responsible - but those persistent enough might learn the knight of Bane, Bueroza, was suspected the crucifier. He had traveled through town recently with a woman on one of his regular journeys to Darkhold.

Within the day, the crucified bodies would be gone, the makeshift crosses still remaining, the bindings severed. There was no evidence of any grave or pyre, but a plainly visible etching on the stones of the bridge- scratched into the rock with simplified lines by the end of a blade, but still easily recognizable- the sword bearing wolf of the Northern Watch.

A few might hear rumor of the black clad commander cutting the bodies down, and heaving them into the river while heatedly arguing with a hulking northman.

Rat exterminators and supplicants to the Black Abbey alike would notice that the basalt altar consecrated to the God Tyrant bore a fresh coat of arterial spatter that eve. Rumors speak of a cruel bout between two human juggernauts taking place to exalt the dark deity and of dark pacts sealed with blood. The sanguine caked on the jagged edges of the shrine and a single piece of indented black steel - bitten through with savage force - were the only evidence lending credence to such hearsay.

Striking white compeer, a stalwart companion
Regal beast, presence keeps, hallowed stallion
In Farmlands, North, there tethered said horse
And ritual by foot became quickly enforced

Comes maiden from Gate, now daily tradition
Violet hair, berries sweet, familiar musician
Bears she treat, apple red, delivered by palm
Paired soft with prose and occasional psalm
"Four days will quickly steep themselves in nights;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time."

Flashes of light and a blur of motion can be seen around Soubar as a fiery-haired magic caster ran through the town. Her objective seemed only to be devoted to lending assistance to the various merchants on their trading deals; helping to smooth out conflicts and ferry supplies back and forth. Of significant note is the evident symbol of Ilmater flying on the cloak ever caught in her wake. Anyone who interacts with her notes a kind heart and a warm smile. Unless insisted for, she rejects payment for the work she does. Since she used magic to perform her tasks swiftly, she's as quickly gone as she appeared.

The woman's offers of assistance were met by some traders with a set of raised eyebrows and quick, startled refusal to accept any, usually accompanied by not-so-subtle removal of certain goods from the open view. Others were more abrasive, telling the fiery-haired woman that they won't be accepting no charity from the goodly types and that she can piss off to where she came from. Save for the halfling merchant, who did not mind the offer of free labor; most looked upon the visitor with suspicion and puzzlement.

Morgan standing in her usual spot outside the blades fortress would notice the woman enter the town. Her eyes would lock on to her and wouldnt leave her, not even for a moment. Slowly she would make her way into the commerce area to confront the woman. "Ilmater has no place here woman" she would say, the sound of her voice would carry the words toward the red haired sorcerer.

Undeterred, the woman does what little she can before winking out. Despite the obvious negative response to her presence, she never loses her smile.

Unfavorable rumors about the Frilled Lizards group of wannabe-mercenaries have begun to spread among the Soubarians. Female merchants and denizens have been especially vocal about the mistreatment and underhanded comments they have been receiving over the past tenday or so.
Tytos Lyonson of the Ebon Blade Mercenaries can be seen around Soubar, laughing at the antics of these newcomers and making his own lewd comments at the expense of the women in question.
Later, he attempts to locate a member or two of these 'Frilled Lizards' within the Winding Way Tavern for a chat over drinks.
