Okay so I'm getting pretty hung up now... I switched to Linux a while ago and just recently tried to install NWN2 on it... Had several problems, and learned much... save for one very important aspect... The client extension... Not sure where in this whole site it was talked about, but this was the closest google could find.

I got the whole game to install, the expansions to install, and the updates in-place. But as soon as I tried to run the Client Extension, it hung up my whole computer and stalled for 10 minutes or so. Did some digging and apparently the extension injects some dll files or something and retroactively saves them. Assuming they're the logs or possibly how it figures out what servers are online. Who knows, but does anyone use NWN2 and play here while on linux? (and please don't say Virtual Machines).

I previously played from Linux Mint (Debian Jesse) but I don't remember if I had the extender loaded at the time, as this might be before GS was no longer available.
Make sure you have vcrun2005 incorporated.

tail -f the wine output and any stack traces when you run it so we know what's going on.

The extender relies on servers to run nwnx4 and xp_bugfix to announce their existence to a web service volunteered to this that the game client extenders and nwnlist relies on for reporting, then mimics the output to the game server matchmaking in game where Gamespy dropped the ball on. Only the hdl is necessary with the nwlauncher.exe

md5sum the downloaded files if need be.

nwl.exe : 0603075C

For what it's worth, from an earlier post in this thread, Steam is still honoring the NWN2 and it's expansions fully patched out of the box despite it not being able to be purchased on the Steam store.

Okay, bit of a hangup. Possibly cause I'm generally new to gaming on linux, but when you say "tail -f the wine", where would I put that on the PlayOnLinux configuration window for my Neverwinter Nights 2 virtual drive? Assuming you've used it, of course.

On another note, I can't seem to find reliable areas to download many of the files you suggested (vcrun 2005 being the exception)

I tried looking around Steam for nwn content but to no avail. :(

Hey there,

I'm just trying to install NWN2 back on my macbook, running on OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan.
Unfortunately, I couldn't even try to install the extensions since I can't even find the original game compatible with this OS. I downloaded the only one available on the Pirate Bay but when I try to install it, it says the installation failed because it's not compatible with this OS.

Do you guys have some tricks to bypass this "incompatibility" ? Or shall I bootcamp my mac to play NWN2 back again ?

Thanks for your help ;)

Nefris,
You'll need to use an emulator, in this case Wineskin. Below is the link for an older wrapper and engine. After downloading and following the instructions, you can upgrade both the wrapper and engin using Wineskin Winery, which is included in the download torrent file.

Then, you'll need to download the files for this Server, which may happen automatically one you Direct Connect to BGTSCC. If they don't, you can download the complete but not exactly recent set of files, then the Server will auto-update you completely. You can find that download here:

If you need any help with this, just ask. Good luck! Cya IG soon.

A complete Neverwinter Nights 2 (OC, MotB, SoZ) Windoze package installed under Wineskin for emulation on the Mac. This package also includes Wineskin Winery, with a few older version of the Wrapper and Engine.

Unpacked, it is 13GB. I broke it down into 100mb segments using 7z compression. You'll need a 7z utility to unpack and un-segment.

I've stripped all the *.ini files of information, so you'll have to provide your own set of 3 CD keys, Gamespy user name, etc.

Also, there are no PW files, so you'll have to download those as well. I guess that goes without saying, but....

Furthermore, after stripping the package of all extraneous and incriminating information, I haven't actually tested if it works.

Good luck!
Or, you can use Bootcamp, and/or something like Parallels.

BlueAce, Steve, any others really on the Mac side.

If you've an interest to point out some bugs along the way with the xoreos project, we have precompiled binaries available here.

Just an FYI: I don't know the current health of the Seeds, so if you're having little luck downloading, I'll see if I can either Force mine or repackage the Wineskin files.

Damn it's very complicated.

Meanwhile, I tried to do the wrapper myself. I downloaded Wineskin and the NWN2 Complete Edition from Gog (plus your files containing haks and other files for BGTSCC).
I managed to install NWN2 through wine and launch the game, but before the first Atari ad appears, I've got a blank screen with several error messages :

"Your video card has less than 128 MB of video memory. Performance may be less than optimal"
"Unable to detect a video card with hardware 3D acceleration. Neverwinter Nights 2 requires a video card that supports then please make sure it's enabled"
"Hardware 3D acceleration appears to be disabled. If your video card supports hardware 3D acceleration, then please make sure that it's enabled"

Now I'm stuck here :(

I'll see if I can package up the Wineskin without the BGTSCC files, by this weekend.
Probably the easiest method, and others who use Macs can also benefit.

Thanks a lot for what you're doing.

Meantime I tried a lot of different ways to install it, but still unsuccessful I've got the same error messages about my video card.

I've seen on several forums people having the same issues, and they fixed it using "Winetricks" emulating DirectX... But I neither know how to install winetricks on Mac nor emulating something with it.

Wineskin has a control panel of sorts where you can dial out how the app functions, like using Quartz or other video emulation. I believe packaged need to be built by applying wine tricks. Or, it might be installed automatically—you just need to initialize it.

Anyway, if you can hold out until the weekend, I can either Force Seed my Wineskin torrent or upload it somewhere for you.
