I made a provision for 3 or 4 library NPCs I think it was. One was for Candlekeep, one for BG, one for S'shamath and the other I can't recall. (if there was a 4th)
We can easily add more if need be though.

They are seperate libraries, so stuff from one won't show in the other. DMs can also easily remove books from them.

For Candlekeep I'd guess it'd be in their library building

As for copy paste, I assume so - if the other UI windows support that then it shouldn't be any different. You'd still have to structure the text though.

Would it be at all possible for the following to exist:

1. Hidden text in books (need to cast Detect Magic or something to see it/read it).
2. Books written in specific languages, and the toon viewing/reading the book would have to have that language in order to read the text in Common.

Just some thoughts on how to utilize this very cool new Books implementation for varied IC uses.

#2 is already part of the system, from what I understand, and I think Ras was talking about special events on reading that could make something like #1 possible, maybe.

Yes, languages are already supported.

Special events can be added after its live and in game. It was premature to start making spells for it before it was even on the serve r :)

Book-based spells would be a lot of fun, and there are plenty from which to choose!

Explosive Runes
Sepia Snake Sigil
Illusory Script
Symbol of Death
Symbol of Fear
Symbol of Insanity
Symbol of Pain
Symbol of Sleep
Symbol of Stunning
Symbol of Weakness
And more!

Here is a question! Is there any way for player-written books to be added to the loot-table in the books catagory? It would be fun to have more books to loot, and if I have to read War of the Creator Races or The Origin of Magic one more time... not to mention all of the pointless crafting books!

They work!! :D

All we're still dealing with now is setting up and testing the Library System. With luck we might get the books into the shops even if the library part of the system isn't live yet. (Or if we're even luckier, the libraries will work without a hitch and will go live then as well)

This stuff opens for a lot of possibilities!

Will there be a way of tracking the authors of the books?

Not that I think it will be abused, but theoretically, it would be possible to produce some very lewd material unsuited for young players.

I do agree that we will need to be careful, as some griefer could start spamming the libraries with books containing nothing but swear-words for like ten pages. At the same time, though, I would love to be able to write with a pseudonym, if, say, my warlock wanted to write books on unsavory subjects but not be chastised for doing so.

Yes, the libraries record character and account names, as well as serial numbers. DM's can purge the libraries as well to avoid this. :)

But... but... but.... if pages of swear words are not allowed, how can Durin write his epic dwarven poetry?

The library is stored in our SQL database.
So it would be easy to purge spammers or other issues as well as identify who did it.

I wrote a test book about the Illithilich war in S'shamath. You can write about 16 pages containing 3 paragraphs per page. That's around 10.000 characters usually.

10.000 characters is the limit that the books will store. You need to start another volume if you have too little space. :)

If you're feeling up for it you can ask a DM to give you a readable & writable book. If the DM consents you can test out how it works :)

The extra feedback might be usefull to us to iron out any bugs and userfriendliness issues.

Ah, that explains why the librarian wouldn't accept my DMFI-edited NWN2 books!

I was far too scared of just being told "read the patchnotes" to ask
Amaer Kellen - Actor, Author, Magician, Adventurer, Explorer, Egotist.
Dhalmas Zalvoon - Apprentice of Thay.
Gerda Greyfox - A barbarian blacksmith's lovely daughter.
