Several dwarves can be seen pulling a wagon loaded with appear to be green skins. After parking the affair outside of the Friendly Arm Inn, they can be heard calling out to passerbys asing for either "Mendel" or "Laisren".

Fliers appear all around the region around Baldurs Gate, sometimes found on the ground dropped by passersby, and sometimes hanging on event boards. The flier reads:

Come all ye dwarves!
The banner of Kraak Helzak calls yer name. If ye find yerself far from kin and clan the nation of Kraak Helzak offers you a home in these lands. Learn how many dwarven clans are uniting together as one under King Battlehammer and building a new fortress in the land that will mark the creation of a new dwarven nation. Come enjoy all the ale you can drink this weekend at the Friendly Arm Inn and learn how ye can become part with this great movement that Moradin himself be pleased with.

//Friendly Arm Inn bar, this saturday at 6pm EST. This event is for ANY dwarf character, especially those who are not a member of Kraak Helzak. Lots of ale, lots of dwarves, should be fun

Work continues on the external fortifications of the future dwarf city of Kraak Helzak. The stone is brought up from the mines and laid carefully into place, forming strong foundations to the planned defenses. Skeletons of siege engines are beginning to take shape behind the fortifications and patrols of dwarves continue to keep the trolls at bay.

A new dwarf can be seen approaching the Kraak Helzak's encampment, his armor adorned with symbols of Moradin. After introducing himself as a priest of Moradin and swearing fealthy to the Thane, he immediately asks directions for two places in particular: the temple dedicated to the All-Father and the forge, alternating between both places with an almost insane desire to get to work.

Wagons upon wagons of grovel and stone are carried outside of the cave located in the Troll Claw hills. There appears to be many dwarves at work outside of the cave, and judging from the all those wagons, a much bigger working force inside of it. It seems the dwarves are entrenched in this hostile land for a very long time to come...

After Durin has a long and uncharacteristically serious discussion with Igneous, he begins to spread the word that groups of loosely organized Black Orcs are moving northward from the Sharptooth woods. Igneous reports they are moving quickly and do not have seige engines. They are in groups of 10-15 orcs and are rumored to have access to dark magic.

A half-score dwarves descended upon the Friendly Arms' Inn. Bently and his staff were hard pressed to keep kegs full and platters set with meats and cheeses as the stout folk drank and ate. They discussed many things and nearby patrons caught enough to realize they were discussing work on something important and relationships with other groups in the region. The dwarves were secretive, however, and no specifics could be heard.

They soon stood, shouted oaths to their gods and kin and rushed out the door as quickly as they came. They moved to Nashkel where, as a whole, they rushed the outer defenses of the Nashkel Mines which were overrun with Orogs and Duergar.

Preparing the assault

The stout kin worked together, combining steel and magic to cut through the ranks of the foul beasts within the mines. Duergar, great rock beasts, Orog Sorcerors, and even mighty demons assaulted them but the stout kin would not be diverted. In the deepest reaches of the mine the dwarves found a mighty pit fiend, a great ancient devil. Swinging mightily, they laid the beast low and took its tendons to power great war machines.

The Rescue

Whispers and shadows and nothing more. The dark elves moved in the gloomy tunnels and were no more substantial than a mist or a dark cloud. No more than a whisper of a whisper marked their presence. The elf on point signaled a halt and all six melted into the shadows along the wall becoming all but invisible. There was movement ahead. Six sets of ears swiveled and turned to listen. Boots on stone. Perhaps a dozen approached. The leader signaled that they advance, but the second in command hesitated. The sounds were coming fast without slowing. The owners of those footfalls were either very foolish or very certain of themselves. Etiher way, they were dangerous. Sounds of battle ended as soon as they began and the sounds of movement barely stopped. The other four dark elves looked to the second in command and he signaled that they were to stay put. With the swiftness of a snake, he struck at the leader's neck, nearly decapitating the dark elf. Before the body slid to the ground, the other five drow slid into the shadows and were never noted by the large group of surfacers who soon charged through the tunnel.

"Ne'er mind th' deed drow dog. We've work t' be doin lads!" Durin thundered and urged the group onward past the corpse of the drow patrol leader. They continued down the corridor at a run, their shodden boots thundering in the bowels of the ancient fortress that was Durlag's Tower. They encountered one other drow patrol that lacked the prudence of the first and left their dark corpses scattered about the room, barely slowing their charge. Their faces were grim and their movements determined. There was work to be done, and they were to complete it or die.

A white-cowled human name Eden pointed to a great door of oak and steel. "This way. This leads to the Underdark."

The company exchanged glances and took a brief moment to prepare dweomers of protection and defense from the various evils rumored to exist in the tunnels below the tower. The two dwarves at the head of the colum, Revenark Stonehold and Durin Ironfaar pushed the door open and the company rushed through.

Fiery molten rivers assaulted their eyes and their lungs were choked by the smells of brimstone and sulphur. Their wards, cast by powerful divine warriors of the Order of the Silver Rose, held the heat at bay and protected them from harm. They passed through the tunnels quickly, aided by the magic of Eden and a small sprightly fellow known to many of the company and who referred to himself as Deacon.

"This way, this way, Deacon knows the way!" The sprightly figure darted to and fro in the caverns, nimbly sidestepping salamanders and efreeti while the dwarves and knighs cut them down. They crossed a crumbling stone causeway and found themselves face to face with a mighty salamander flanked by sorcerors. The group formed a tight wedge and divided the force. Axe and sword met salamander flesh and claw and soon the creatures were vanquished. Wounds were healed and wards of protection quickly renewed and the mighty company was off again, the diminutive Deacon and confident Eden leading the way.

They entered a shadowy plane of existence through the magic of a spinning orb. Deacon placed his small hands on the sphere and spoke softly and quickly, reciting ancient words of power. The room was engulfed in darkness deeper than the darkest night, a darkness that pulled and tugged at the very hearts and minds of the adventurers. They were falling, falling, falling. Time and space seemed to lose meaning or coherence, then they landed solidly on cold stone and were greeted by shreiking wraiths and tormented spirits. Massive creatures of shadow and mist surrounded them and clawed at their flesh and their souls.

The warriors of the group formed a perimeter and did battle with the creatures. The knights called down mighty magic from their gods and Deacon summoned magical swords and bolts of energy to tear and rend the creatures of darkness. Their enemies were ancient and cunning. Familiar with the ways of men, dwarves, and elves, they fought with uncanny skill causing injury upon painful injury. The company would not be shaken, however. They countered each assault with skill and power, vanquishing their foes one by one until they fell and evaporated and disappeared into the darkness as quickly as they came leaving nothing but silence and a penetrating sense of dread.

"This way, this way, cloud twelve! There it is!" The little figure pointed toward a thick cloud of darkness.

"Into the cloud. It is a portal, it is. Thou must go though the portal after Deacon!"

The sudden exclamation from Deacon caused more than one of the company to jump. Durin farted. Revenark chuckled. Missy held her nose and chastized Durin who shrugged unrepentently. Seth watched the entire affair with the beginning of a half-smile. Perhaps there was hope after all.

The lightheartedness was short lived as disaster struck the party. Cloud twelve teleported them into waist deep water. Waist deep for the humans. The dwarves and Missy the halfling squire were hard pressed to keep their heads above water and Deacon had to paddle like a small water-creature to keep his little head from bobbing under. He sputtered and splashed, trying to lead the party. Dark cloud-portals lined the passage and the current was treacherous. With a shout Gina Wayan, Revenark Stonehold, and Seth Siger disappeared into a tunnel.

"No no! Thou must follow Deacon!"

The sprightly fellow sputtered and splashed as the three disappeared. His words were lost as great creatures of water fell upon the group. Revenark and Durin along with Aaron Lyonaler, a valiant knight of the Silver Rose, kept the creatures at bay long enough for deacon to lead the party to safety. The three warriors rushed into the cloud after their comrades shortly before three more water creatures appeared and charged.

Demoralize, soaked, and freezing the group huddled in a room lit only by a pulsing, wavering portal rimmed in piercing blue light. The seven companions looked to each other, not wanting to break the silence and proclaim the words that must be said. Durin spoke at long lenght.

"Well... d'we go back fer em?"

Another long silence. Seconds grew into minutes.

"Deacon is not sure if Deacon can find them again."

Eden spoke next. "And what if more get lost along the way?"

Everyone agreed, but no one wanted to articulate the fate of their friends. They were lost in these shadowy ruins. Lost without a guide and without hope. Heads and shoulders fell and they slowly made their way toward the portal. Deacon stretched his small fingers toward the shimmering surface when the door burst open behind them. Aaron and Eden readied their weapons while Durin blocked the rest of the party behind his massive shield. Before they could strike, Seth and Gina crashed into their ranks, unable to stop their forward momentum. Revenark was behind them yelling.

"Go go go lads! They be right behind me!"

There was no hesitation. Durin shoved and the others pushed and as one the group lurched through the portal, just out of the reach of dark claws and shadowy fangs.

"Oi! Git yer arse out o' me face!" Durin growled.

"Ow! No biting!" Missy yelped.

"Well.. git yer arseparts out o' me face an' ah'll stop bitin em!"

A few more yelps and bellows followed and the stack of dwarves, humans, and halfing was sorted out. They looked around and found themselves in a dark chamber. It was silent and still. There were no lights save for the glowing runes on Deacons small hat. Gina spoke several words and a light flashed into being above her head. The entire company stopped. There, before them, lay three still forms. Elves.

"There they be!" Durin rushed to the figures and checked them. Coming to the form of a young and delicate female he yelled.

"Oi! She be movin! She be movin!"

Seth rushed to Durin and touched the elf. A soft glow enveloped her form and her many cuts and bruises closed, then disappeared and a breath stirred in her throat. Her eyes fluttered open.

"Nai is.. alive?" She looked at the group in confusion.

Gina laughed and threw her arms around her friend. She sobbed joyously. Nai's eyes soon grew wide.

"Mendel... MENDEL!" She broke free of Gina's grip and ran to another form on the ground. Closer examination revealed it to be Mendel of En Dharasha. His wounds were grave and after conferring, Aaron, Seth, and Eden agreed that he would require skilled treatment in a safe environment. The group fashioned a litter out of several rusted pikes and an old blanked and placed Mendel with several other elves on it. They turned and followed the bobbing head of Deacon as he entered another cloud portal.

The dwarves and humans struggled to carry the fallen elves through the icy waters of the fortress. Great beasts of water clawed at them and tore at their armor and flesh. None of the party passed unscathed and wound after wound was bandaged or healed. Seth was exhausted and only his determination and honor drove him forward. Suddenly, a great wall of water crashed into Seth and Revenark as a huge elemental charged. The two warriors were thrown into a cloud portal and were no more. The others did not see their passing until they had exited the shadowy, otherwordly ruins.

"Oi. Where be Seth?" The question was simple, but struck fear into the hearts of the companions. They had just exited the last shadow portal and recognized the room. They were near the surface. Hope had begun to rise in their chests, but now Seth and Revenark had disappeared again. Looking at one another, seeing each others wounds and how the icy water had sapped the life from their limbs, the companions knew that to return would mean certain doom for them all. They turned and left the accursed ruins, following a quietly sobbing Deacon who was weeping at the loss of his friends.

The patrol was larger this time. Fifteen dark elves and a priestess of Lolth moved effortlessly through the upper tunnels of the underdark. They had heard the footsteps again, and noted the change. They were slow, weary, and tentative. They were weak. Red eyes narrowed in wicked smiles and signals were passed along.

"Move forward. Flank. Ambush."

The patrol broke into three units who moved with orderly ease in unison with the others. They blended with the shadows and lay waiting for their quarry. A dwarf was the first around the bend. Three twangs sounded in the darkness and crossbow bolts found seams in the finely wrought armor. The dwarf bellowed and charged, dropping his shield and grasping his mighty axe in both hands.

"IRONFAAAAR!"

Two drow appeared before him. The first feinted left and the second moved straight in for the kill. Durin was far too exhausted to respond to the feint and charged straight into second drow. Caught off guard, it fell before Durin and found a dwarven blade piercing its chest. The first drow, thinking himself outmaneuvered, moved back to the shadows and flanked the panting dwarf. He had his blade mere feet from Durins unsuspecting neck when a bolt thudded into his leg, and a floating sword began slashing at him. Wounded, the drow danced back and whistled softly. The rest of the patrol attacked then, and the battle was met. Curved blades danced and flashed, blows were traded, and the wounded grunted and fell. Mighty in battle, but weakened by the shadowy ruins, the companions were forced back again and again, their numbers dwindling. Durin went down with a roar as he tackled two drow. A third smote the back of his helm and he lay still. Missy was severly injured when a drow blade pierced her chain shirt and she slid to the floor breathing weakly. Aaron and Eden were the only two standing between their injured comrades and the five remaining drow when a flash of light pierced the darkness. Powerful divine engergy rippled through the cavern and tore at the drow. They were thrown against the walls and lay clutching their eyes, blinded by the bright lights. Aaron and Eden wasted no time and dispatched the disabled dark elves. Turning to the source of the light, they saw Revenark supporting an exhausted Seth Siger, drained and nearly unconscious from calling forth the burst of energy. Revenark took the fallen elves while Eden healed Durin and Missy with what little power he had remaining. The company passed as quickly as they could through the remaining tunnels, through Durlag's tower and out into the light of dawn. They marched steadily, ragged and bleeding, until they saw the gates of gullykin. The sentries spied the group and soon a party of stout halflings came to their aid. The halflings gawked at the greivous wounds as the group made their way to the center of town. Messengers were sent to the elves and dwarves. Priests and healers were summoned and arrangements were made for the wounded travelers. The ten stood looking, mute from exhaustion and pain and only Deacon, the odd sprightly fellow, retained his energy as he scurried around shouting in glee.

"Huzzzzah! Huzzzzah!"

Travelers on the roads near Beregost and Gullykin may have seen a small troupe of dwarves bearing long sinewy tendons and great sacks of gold. had they taken the time to listen, they would have heard the dwarves boasing of a Dragon's treasure and talking about "tendons fer Hrothgar's siege engines".

The patrol of dwarves moved out en force through the craggy canyons and passes of the Troll Claw hills. They watched for movement with keen eyes and suspicious ears glancing this way and that, axes at the ready. A flash of green between two rocks caught the eye of Revenark Stonehold who was on point.

"Stinkin troll! Gitem lads!"

The dwarves charged in a half moon formation which soon flanked and surrounded the monstrous green beast. It flailed its clawed hands, kicked, and bit but was soon overwhelmed by the seasoned dwarves and their battle tactics. Finishing it off with a flask of acid, they looked up to an astonishing sight. They saw the head of a man but placed on the body of a winged beast with spikes protruding from its back and tail.

The more learned of the group identified it as a Manticore and the patrol stood at the ready for many minutes waiting to see what it would do. Shocking the dwarves, it spoke in a gravelly croaking voice.

"You... small men... you will help me."

The dwarves turned red in fury. Calling a dwarf a "small man" invited swift and unerring death at the end of an axeblade or hammerhead. The manticore's next words saved it, though it did not realize it's impending peril.

"...I will reward you... with gold."

The dwarves hesitated, the haze of rage retreating before the tingle of greed. They looked between each other and although some were hesitant to trust the beast, they agreed. The beast told them of a great monster - a hydra by name - which had invaded its lair. The manticore promised great sums of gold if they would but kill it for him. It told them of the lairs location, then flew off into the mountains.

"Ah don't trust the beast." Revenark shook his head as he spoke.

A dwarven wizard, Magnus spoke up. "We should try to study it. I am very interested in such a magical creature."

Several other dwarves spoke up and shared their views. It was finally decided that they would kill the Hydra, then kill the manticore, as the dwarves could not have such a beast so close to their clanhold. Nodding in unison, they set out.

Along the way, the met a small childlike figure.

"Hiya!"

The hinn woman bubbled as she greeted the dwarves. She showed them several troll pelts that she had collected and the dwarves all exchanged surprised and impressed glances. During the meeting, three stone trolls charged and struck down Magnus. The hinn woman fought valiantly and assisted the dwarves in driving back the beasts, then used her skills with healing to save the bleeding wizard. She was immediately invited into the party.

Finding the cave the manticore spoke of, the Dwarves were confronted by a monstrous five-headed serpent. The hydra. It spouted poisonous gas and freezing breath and struck quickly at the dwarves. The dwarves scattered and then regrouped, hacking and striking the beast whenever it lunged at them. All the while, the hinn shot bolt after bolt into the beasts' many heads and necks. With a violent convulsion, the beast fell and lay still. The company had little time to catch their breath as the sound of wings, many wings descended from the sky. A gravelly voice rang out.

"The hydra is dead. Geeeeet theeeeem!"

A score of the ugly beasts landed and surrounded the dwarves and hinn. They formed a tight circle, interlocking their shields and moved in sweeping circles about the battlefield, each dwarf protecting the other as they took turns landing blows upon their many foes. Claws scratched, teeth bit, hammers rang, and axes chopped. After many minutes the dwarves and their small ally stood victorious among the many corpses.

Entering the cave, they found that although the manticore behaved treacherously, it did not lie about the hydra's treasure. Within the cave were vast mounds of gold and each of the companions filled their packs with as much as they could carry. With much laughter and joking, the seven dwarves, accompanied by their new friend, returned to their clanhold for a night of drinking and tale telling.

The Temple
At first there were merely rumors. Nothing more than drunken whisperings around tavern tables. Then the first confirmed reports came in with merchant caravans, followed shortly by deaths and a drop in trade to the growing dwarven clanhold. The dead were restless and organized.

A patrol of dwarves assisted by a human ally set out from the fortress of Kraak Helzak towards the east to confront the threat head on. In their ranks a seasoned warrior-priest by the name of Telinus Axegrinder. The patrol followed the signs of evil to the High Moors where they were assaulted by a band of hobgoblins. Gutteral chanting rose from the misty bog and crossbow bolts hissed out of the darkness as the brutish monsters charged. The party closed ranks, raised shields, and moved forward as one. All seasoned warriors, they worked their shields and weapons in synchronicity so that as one struck, the other was protected. The beasts fell to the precise work of the warriors.

The boggy mists became closer and colder as the party followed a path deeper into the moors. Creaking and unearthly noises resounded in the tops of the clawlike trees. The band stayed in close formation. Their discipline saved them as pale shapes descended from the trees and fired volley after volley of arrows into their midst. Harsh yet somehow melodic words flitted on the moist air as long dead and corrupted elves loosed their magics on the intruders. Telinus healed the wounded while the warriors of the group charged, swinging hard with axe, hammer, and sword. The fighting was fierce and more than one fell before the undead fiends were slain or driven away. Bandages were applied and prayers were made. The group resumed their search and soon found what they were looking for. Ahead in the mist a great angular shape materialized. Stone blocks engraved with intricate runes stretched up past the reaches of the skeletal trees and into the unnatrually black sky. An aura of intense evil radiated from the temple and gave even the stoutest of the dwarves pause.

No words were exchanged. None were needed. Telinus nodded and they ascended the temple. Three large vampires guarded the top. They charged and were held in place by Revenark Stonehold and Durin Ironfaar. Telinus, the human known as Leo and the rest of the party flanked around behind the unsuspecting undead and in a rush, toppled them over the edge of the temple to be dashed to pieces on the rubble below. Their corporeal forms broken, the angry spirits of the vampires rushed hissing into the darkness. Revenark spoke.

"Go on then lad. The sooner we finish and leave this place the better."

The rest of the dwarves grunted in agreement. Telinus prepared the bottles of holy water and a sacred axe, blessed by the Dwarven Gods, on the temple's summit. Uttering a prayer and then calling out a word of power, the holy water and axe were consumed. There was a moment of still.

"Did it work?"

Telinus looked around, then his eyes went wide. He shook his head violently, then the entire temple began to shake. Dark clouds billowed out from between the blocks of stone and materialized into wraiths, vampires, and powerful Revenants. The horde charged up the tower towards the small band. The dwarves interlocked shields at the top of the tower and used the steep stairs to their advantage, swinging axes and hammers at the heads of the undead and managing to knock some from their high perch. The fighting was fierce and became even moreso when several vampires materialized behind the dwarves and attacked. The fighting went on long into the night before the horde was dispatched. Bleeding and exhausted, the group stumbled down the temple stairs and ran across the bog toward the safety of the lowlands. They were harried by undead throughout the retreat and several nearly fell before they left the lands of the cursed elves.

None were sure of exactly what had happened, but they were sure of one thing. They had angered a powerful evil and drawn its wrath and attention onto the dwarves.

The scribes and loremasters examined the artifact recovered from the lair of the trolls. They determined that it was one of a pair of such crystals. They advised King Battlehammer that if they had both crystals, they could more completely understand their workings and. The king made a decree. A small band of warriors was to go out in search of the other crystal. Consulting Fognar, a renowned spellcaster and sage, the group of warriors travelled far to the south into the Cloudpeak mountains. There, they found an ancient crypt full of powerful undead creatures. The stout kin, aided by a human and an elf, delved deeply into the fortress in search of the artifact. They slew many an undead, but many more rose up to meet them. They became separated and lost and eventually wandered into an immense chamber containing a colossal skeletal dragon. Three warriors went down quickly and the rest gathered the bodies and retreated from the room. Seeing that they were unprepared for such a mighty foe, the remaining warriors made their way to the surface for the long trek back to their clanhold with their reports.
