I must be a strange one to say this... But i realy dont like it if some one gives me a tell and askes me if im ok with what ever they want to do to me and i would rather have them just do it to me so i wont see it coming IC and OOC.

To give a example.
A few months ago a guy gave me a tell and asked if i was ok with a bit of pvp.
I say yes and he comes walking up to me and leads me to his hiden friends where i get stabed by him and his friends.
They take me with them and i get cut up in the name of some god :D.

Now this was fun rp and i had a good time even though i had 0% chance of "winning".
But i would have loved it sooooo mutch more if they would have just attacked me with out the OOC warning.

PS npc's monsters dont send me a tell to ask if im ok with them trying to eat my face of. :p

Most people arn't like you.

Also, it's to prevent people who'd just be around to 'kill' people, without much RP or very light one, to ruin their day.

I will quote Maecius from Athorn's signature.
This isn't call of duty; you're not here to teabag people.

here's my basic advice for pvp

1. only pvp with players that are mature or that you know

2. don't pvp with unknown characters/accounts

3. Realise that pvp should only be used to further some rp story

4. be prepared to lose and rp the consequences of it. (ignore permastrikes stuff and the like because that is a dm decision anyways, so don't god mod it)

5. After the pvp remove the character from place of pvp for a good while and allow things to calm down for bit

6. if you have to tell the character ooc, (that this maylead to pvp, )

1. if players first reaction is to sput off some rules and other none sense and is aggressive in nature: see rule 1( and leave the situation, cause this is mostly going to lead to a dm complaints, screenshots, rule anaylzing, he said, she said and a head ache for everyone involved)

2. if the player says they enjoy rp or it's fine and will roll with with whatever happens. Then follow server pvp rules with rp out's given, players have a good time a new story has played out. Thank everyone involved with the rp/pvp situation and everyone leaves with some character plot development

While the surprise effect is lost by asking for acceptance, asking may not only bring concent. It also give the other player a chance make something intelligent rpwise in the situation.

We play this game together shaping stories.

My toons have been beaten, tortured in horrifying ways, kissed, flogged, cursed, slandered and a lot more. In turn ive been rather naughty at times.
Once I was so convincing about faking the turning of another player's toon into a vampire it took me 5 minutes to explain what had really happened to the initially rather dismayed player.

So, while not asking may bring surprise it makes discontent and shoddy roleplay more probable.

My advice?
If in doubt ask.

Imho

Something I've been wondering reading this thread: Is it legal to ask consent for PVP well in advance of one's plans? I mean, I've asked consent before from behind invisibility, and for some reason a lot of people suddenly find it in their best interests to keep an extra number of buffs up.

If you could ask a few weeks/months in advance, people would most likely be back to 'not seeing it coming'.

Well, as a person whos toon has been in on many assassinations of other characters, i say it's still best to inform ahead of time. Heck, I even gave a time frame most of the time. "Lets go two weeks with this and if we don't find him/her, we will talk about whether we should extend the PvP window or not. I also informed them why they were being tracked without giving away too much info (you are marked for assassination), and in some of the situations, I literally made it a game of sorts. "...If you take down a few you get 10,000 per assassin..." for example.

I just think the whole killing things gets out of hand and its immersion breaking. I'd rather beat up a person and take their shoes than kill them. That means there's an ongoing thread of RP that can be played upon. You know darn well you are not going to perm the character so why kill them unless its an official assassination of course? I think 75% of the PvP encounters should end in beatings, left for dead, hauled off to detention (very short in RL), or running away. It get kind of boring when you've killed the same person over and over again. *yawns and puts the mans head on a pike* "That'll teach you to mess with the us....for the third time..." It can get silly.

It was during a long set of events that culminated with being captured in the UD, held captive (unplayable), and forced to fight an ally in the pit (Ujio) and then being used as undead. The Weave Masters organized a recovery op for his remains. Pretty sweet plot of events that set the stage a couple years later for the Tolerance is Treason campaign. All of it was voluntary to help create story arcs, and boy did it. Lots of forum RP around all of that was erased though, for some reason.
Here is what remains of that plot.

We have deleted a lot of older posts on this forum to keep forum size down. I think Luna's taken a shotgun approach to it too, so we've even lost rules and stuff occasionally.

But, and you've probably already thought to do this, have you tried to check the old proboards forum? The Ujio-Wyndsoul plot is aaannnnciiiiieeeenttt.
