There is also the option of taking monstrous humanoid as a companion. I tried the hell hound a while back but I didn't care for the aoe breath weapon. Damaged me as much as the enemies.

Monstrous humanoid hurts Druids and rangers more as they can't benefit from awaken or the magic fang spells. It's best for Clerics.
Wirg to Pug: "Iz lat dun?"
Pugratix to a snarky militia man: "Mmmm. Not yet. I will live for hundreds of years and be heralded as one of the greatest forces of destruction on the face of the world. The only thing you can destroy is the outhouse."

Interesting, I did not know about the breath weapon! Even with Evasion it hurts so much? Sounds dissapointing.

What about the worg? Is the knock-down type, as the wolf?
Myrualae - Chantress of Doron Amar
Snow - Sorcery and carrots!
Gomez de Aguirre - The Fabulous Knight of the Mystic Fire
Uelaereene Sai'zzel - Once I saw the stars...
Lilly Sai'zzel - Stormy snowflake

Evasion certainly helps but I had trouble with it at low levels. Also if you are planning on taking natural bond and epic animal companion I imagine you want to use the pet all the time. Not all party members will have evasion to avoid that breath aoe. It is certainly manageable, just something to be aware of.

I have been playing the char in the low levels, but I am still not completely sure about it.

I have been trying the worg (which mechanically is supposed to be like the wolf). The Knockdown fets it gains are useful later?

The other option I am considering is the monster companion. It seems great and funny to RP. But the spells (from ranger spellbook) that can be casted on it is which makes me doubt more. Forum says here that [Greater] Magic Fang and Jagged Tooth cannot be casted on it, logically. But, what about other spells like Nature Favor's, Animal Growth, Enrage Animal, etc. which had "Target: animal companion" in the description?

Knockdown feat from wolf/worg won't work as well later on as the animal's strength check does not scale well in to high teens +. To the best of my recollection no animal spells work on monstrous companion, but haven't tested to be sure.
