Re: Languages - Info ( lore and server )
Understanding fragments of a language with a high lore makes perfect sense to me sorry .. i can pick up some sentences in languages i can't speak (because they are close to languages i know of course) and i'm not a genius nor a linguist.

Yeah...fragments...not entire sentences, parts of sentences, words in a sentence I can get. Not the whole freaking thing.Valefort wrote:Understanding fragments of a language with a high lore makes perfect sense to me sorry .. i can pick up some sentences in languages i can't speak (because they are close to languages i know of course) and i'm not a genius nor a linguist.

Bumping this question.nwnolan wrote:Also, shouldn't Deep Imaskari get the Imaskari language automatically? Or is the Imaskari language something completely different?

That language would have to be created and added to the language list. Not sure how easy it would be, but I'm fine with rping talking a language no non-imaskari should know with emotes and tells.

If you look at the list on the first page it shows all the languages that your character can have. Imaskari is one of them.

What do you mean by that it hasn't been updated yet Side?
Can I get a confirmation that all of the languages on that list are available to be picked either with a DM's help or by yourself?

Well I've never been even seen that name in a list in game, and I don't know anyone who has, so if it is indeed in game it would require either a DM or the list of what is available to players in game to be updated.

Re: Languages - Info ( lore and server )
The ideal system would be to be able to use the lore skill to identify certain words based on familiarity with hearing them. This would be...a huge undertaking, if it's even possible. Fragments would be the next best thing, but again it would need an overhaul. The system in place now is about as close as we have been able to come so far to show that while you may understand a thing here or there by having studied a bit, you don't know enough to carry on a conversation with someone who is fluent in it. It was thought that this makes more sense than never understanding anything at all. If you have a better fix, by all means submit it and we'll look at it. But for now this isn't a high-priority issue for the team.Ithilan wrote:Is there any clarification on Lore skill vs. Language usage? Id really like to see something on this. Possibly DCs added to given languages if Lore is eligible for "understanding".. I see people that obviously dont have X language respond to people using it, based entirely on their lore skill.
I personally ignore all succesfull lore checks, and only RP languages I can speak as well. It makes no sense you can "understand" fragments of a language but not speak it to the same extend.
I can i.e. understand quite a bit of german IRL, which is why I can also speak it partially.
But since I have no idea what russians are saying, I cant pronounce more than two commonly words and could deffiantely NEVER eavesdrop on a conversation between two.
Is it possible for the staff to make a ruling on this or discuss it with eachother, been bothering me a while now.
Thanks in advance.
Choosing to ignore what comes through translated is definitely fine.
The language list that former DM Paranoid provided are all the languages in-game. The list that comes up at character creation is what is available by race per the source books, I think.Side wrote:Well I've never been even seen that name in a list in game, and I don't know anyone who has, so if it is indeed in game it would require either a DM or the list of what is available to players in game to be updated.
The Deep Imaskari speak Rouschom which is not on the list. It uses the Imaskari script though. I'll poke around, see if that's something we'd want to add to the Deep Imasarki.

How are 'Lore Checks' to interpret some less-known languages explained? Bookish Mages happen to know "Thieves' Cant", for example, despite having little to no thieving experience. Or other characters knowing wholly unrelated languages by merit of lore.

I attempted to do some research about languages, and was not able to find much. Does "The Vast" speak a different regional tongue or is it just accented Common? I am particularly interested in Procampur.

Know what would be neat? If we could, in exchange for learning a new language, be given a token that gives a persistent, undroppable -5 to Lore, to represent the PnP ability to spend skill points to learn a language.

+1 to that. Would definitely be simpler then trying to document dozens and dozens of language classes enough to satisfy the powers that be.

Or if you want to make it official-looking, just make a Speak Languages skill or something, like how we added Sense Motive. So many points per new language. Have a dude right next to the RCR guy that checks your ranks and opens the language selection menu if needed.

Re: Languages - Info ( lore and server )
Just read a post about someone saying "Does everyone in the UD get undercommon automatically?" Someone responded "Yes, I'm sure." I have a drow who does not have undercommon, xD He speaks a lot of languages, undercommon is not on the list though.
Oh, side note too. My toon is an assassin. Why can't I speak assassin? It's on the list. :p
