Valefort actually does bring up an interesting point... In PnP I've noticed most players will happily accept when they have a poor roll at an inopportune time and just roll with it. I think the only difference here is that when playing on the server, you don't always have a party (in some cases, folks may rarely have a party) and so that inopportune roll can result in XP penalties. For the 'average' player who might need an hour to gain 1,500-2,000 XP in the high teens and epics, losing that 100 XP per character level equates to a loss of one or more hours of 'grinding' which is why most players want to take those feats that mitigate the penalty of rolling a '1'. (also because the NWN2 rolling mechanism cheats)

Unless for RP reasons I can't think of any reason to take Golbinoids... If you must drop one or the other, I'd drop elves (an elven ranger that doesn't hate drow???!?!?!?!) Undead exist at pretty much all levels and generally have some DR against piercing, so your Favored/Bane of enemies damage is really useful against them.

i dont think you would regret much either way. elves would be for PvP/events (drow). undead is to help remedy the DR and crit immunity. neither will make you consider RcR. do what you like. do what makes sense to your RP/Backstory. you wont regret that.

It's for RP reasons chiefly. I was hoping there may be some highish level gobos somewhere in the module at least. I think I'll drop undead. His focus as a ranger is on the enemies of the forest and the elven people. I'm sure undead qualify but orcs, goblins, monsters and drow seem to be the big ones. Plus I haven't actually encountered any undead since the CR1 cemetery whereas I've fought plenty of goblins.

You have to account for DM plots too, sometimes DM's are undead happy that way.

there are some hobgoblins in the north. i am unsure what the CR is for them off hand. maybe 18?

I'd pick Undead definitely, alongside Giants for PvE purposes. It makes sense RP wise for a Ranger to abhore and hunt down Undead and it will make you useful in DM events.
