When a book spawns in a chest there is a small chance for it to be a Dusty tome. There are no elaborate clues but rather a mechanical lore check that may reveal a true name in the book. But IC you are of course deciphering the book for clues, cross referencing in other books, visiting libraries and sages, etc.

There are no tiers, at least for now. But not all beings are available for the Dusty tome, some have to be learned through other means.

I found one and my feedback is that this stuff is awesome. I had to go through quite the hassle to summon it (lucky rolls and asking friends for help ;) ) but I enjoyed the RP. All systems that give players more to do, and especially more to do together, are great. Unfortunately, I ended up not being able to use it in the end because of alignment restrictions, which is why I thought it was a good idea to be able to bypass that with bluff. But maybe I just need to get even luckier and find another book!

I too found a book, "dusty tome." I was really excited to see how it might play out. Seeing as I had two attempts I held onto for a few days, suspicious I might come across some insane knowledge DC check, but decided to do it anyways...

(Here's my experience with one)
Hidden: show
DC15 know lore nobility check, success, and it did nothing, except changed the books description to "this book contains knowledge of the noble houses of the sword coast." Nothing else added, no tip, no name, lost activation, just a *success* and then it lost its ability to activate, which it had 2 uses, but claimed infinite, but I only needed the one I guess. Not even any precious information on the noble houses of the sword coast.

Just thought other people should know, some of these 'dusty tomes,' do nothing, as mine now sits gathering more dust ironically. So don't get to excited when you find one.
I'm still looking forward to maybe finding another. Maybe there will be a puzzle, or riddle involved next time.

To clarify a few things about the Dusty tomes:
  • It should not have 2 uses but rather unlimited uses. I will check up on that.
  • Once the activation check is passed, the activation is removed from the book and its description is updated.
  • Each character is only allowed 1 attempt to beat the lore check.
  • Each tome will be tied to a specific randomly chosen lore skill.
  • Passing the lore check will award XP, and there is a chance for the description to include a true name. This means that not all tomes will reveal a true name, in fact most will not.
  • Some lore skills have a greater chance than others of producing a true name (I'm sure you can guess which has the best chance)
  • Don't expect lore packed short stories in the decriptions, I'm not a skilled writer (though please feel free to RP that the tome contained a wealth of interesting lore). But it is possible to expand on those in the future.

Even if lore skill ... is better for getting a name, don't expect one if you have maxed that skill. I suppose it will work like survival and fishing. (+1 for every 5 or 6 skill points invested)

But maybe not?

I don't know how fishing works. The lore check is a binary check, pass/fail. Doesn't matter if you roll 30 or 80 as long as you pass the check. The book is what it is, passing the check reveals what it is. Passing a Lore: Nature check just means you know enough about nature to understand the contents of the book.

Once revealed it is open for all to understand. At that point it is just a book with a description.

Oh ok, I hate it. The Dusty tomes with names will be super rare :).
