Care to qualify what 'staff' likes to play? I'm not aware of all of there races and builds, but pretty sure I know of exactly one that plays his main as an elf... And while it's a strong build I would not say Ranger is a powerbuild. Care to hand me access to the server character vault, and as many back ups as possible, so that I can give you the exact information? 
(Please don't, I am actually feeling far too lazy to go through something like that.)
It is just a statement of innocent observation. It is based on player interactions in game and here on the forums, and sometimes beyond those two fields of interaction. It would be far easier to list the members of the 'staff' that have never played an elf, than list all those who have at one point or another.
The fact remains, the reason that has brought Grey Orcs to the Sword Coast could easily be applied to the Star Elves, or you could simply present the discovery of some portal or what not. There are a lot of creative people here, and a lot people who would love to partake in DM events that shape the server.
Not to mention that if Star Elves get in, far more interesting elven subraces of Winged, Aquatic, and the Hairy variety could be added at some later point.
Perhaps bit snowflaky additions each on their own, but little by little, it expands the snowflake tolerance of the server - until my true end game goal can be realised. Wings to Favored Souls, and Dragon Disciples, so that my orcish cannibal character can finally start his establishment that serves deep fried wings of sentient creatures.
(But even that is just a stepping stone towards an even more ultimate and truer end game goal of having playable wererats.)
