Admit it is pretty painless in many ways. Are you near the time you want to log off ? Time to go on a suicide mission ! If you die you'll log off just a bit earlier anyway and tomorrow no consequences.

Honestly Valefort these people are talking about dying when solo. What I can not understand for the life of me is....WHY DO THEY NOT JUST LOG OFF BEFORE THE MONSTER KILLS YOU?
Yeah there are traps and occasionally a death spell but I mean that is really rare so just log off you are solo and no one is there to care about the OOC of the moment.....

I play a pretty independent game from the server and much of it is a mechanical based strategy. Even I would not take that kind if out. I play here for the thrill of danger, thrill of unexpected rp and thrill of opening that chest. While rare I get a big kick out of having others enjoy rp through me, even at the expense of my gameplay. So to log early in a no win situation would rob me of the immense thrill I would get if I could somehow survive it. It's the few times you actually make it out of those situations that feed my desire to keep pushing danger.
So to answer why I would not is easy.... fun

1. It is cheating.
2. Death comes swiftly, in situation where my characters die, usually there's not enough time to log off.
3. Even if you succeed logging off, chances are you'll be killed on logon.
4. Log off is not necessarily instant.

Are you joking? We docked levels for that sort of thing in the past. That's about as sketchy as you can get.

Is this suggestion an alternative choice, or something to replace the current death penalty?

An alternative only.

I believe the idea was for an alternative, not a replacement.

Yay, it would work great for me. Never again an XP loss. At worst switch to one of the many other characters I have and no prob.
Then again, why not remove XP penalty all together? Why stay in a fugue, or waste time grinding the lost XP, when you can RP.
Damn, we can even give max XP at character creation so that we dont waste anytime leveling up, so that we can RP all the time.
Seriously now, no to this "alternative" suggestion. Whether we like it or not, BG has achieved a good compromise between mechanical character development and RP character development. In the past year, the RP xp was increased, so was the XP in general. New quests were implemented, which altogther made it so much easier to level. It will be difficult to make it even better - not impossible though. However, such suggestions clearly change the path that BG has been on while contributing nothing other than avoiding losing xp.

Myrkul also used to charge stacking 10%-20% per death, which could take you down a level. The server has indeed had its share of all manner of sketchy things.
Edit: And yeah, if the experience lost by death penalty takes hours to get back, perhaps several hours with risk of dying again. You have just created an incentive to just log out.

Then make a better suggestion in your own thread.
As of now most go to Nwn1 Arelith server.

Your reaction is odd. Valefort's reaction is odd as well.
I made a suggestion. It made sense to me. Don't like mine, post your own. No need to overreact because of it.
The "new topic" button is available to everybody. Use it.

This is getting tiresome Neginfinity. Can you try taking criticism calmly instead of dismissing anything that doesn't go your way ? It would be great, thanks.

I'm calm like a corpse right now.
I don't get why you seem to be upset.
As for your interepretation of the idea in the OP, I don't see it this way and therefore don't agree with the interpretation.
