Pretty sure starting off with an epic or level 30 character would kind of eliminate the point of the 1-through-30 experiment!
It wouldn't take a lot of effort to come up with a build that can solo most of the world content (even if I weren't a pretty competent character builder after eight years of this, there's a million super-powered builds for BG on the builder site). But I want to play a character with flaws and foibles, who actually has to struggle to get to 30!
That's the best way, I think, for me to get a feel for server content, player attitudes, roleplay and challenge levels, and the viability of playing less-than-optimal builds. So far it's been viable, but I'm not yet into the teens, and I've only explored low-level dungeons (and have almost always had the good luck to run into people and party up).
Playing a crafter who can't craft also gives me lots of incentive to continue encouraging the development of a custom crafting system (or, failing that, the implementation of an existing crafting system with balance tweaks) before we hit 2020.

I meant more that your playing a Crafter that can't actually, mechanically craft—but if you think it's motivating Staff to
actually make a Crafting System, well...hats off to ya!—and a wizardly (?) half-orc, which is like trying to make a high-INT Paladin a good choice!
*waits for all the high-INT Paladin players to chime in...*
Anyway...see what a little "guilt tripping" can do!!!
