not sure if I got any xp for the event but I didn't loose any so all good. As for the attacks this recent run has caused me to look into ((Ddos)) not liking what I am seeing. My self schooling starts today.
thanks for the hard work and fun

To me it feels like the host has some scripted thing happening on sundays on the VHOST
Or can you actually see a bunch of people hitting your point with IP's from all over the world?

What if we had a system where you had to register your IP on the forums in order to gain access to the server in-game. All other IPs would be blocked. Wouldn't that solve most if not all of the DDoS attacks?

It's probably less that they're joining the game, more that they're just pinging the [crud] out of the server it's hosted on. That's generally all a DDoS is- Lots and lots of pings that overload the server and crash it, or at the least causing severe latency.

You can blacklist IP's so the server doesn't accept, think, respond or care about them at router level
or its possible to try blocking icmp packets
theres a bunch of stuff you can do
You could get an azure VHOST and run it when ever the first server is down (its pay as you go - just turn it off when you don't use it) - costs can vary from 15cents to 75cents (with the sky being the limit) to run per hour, this would mean the hacker needs to then perform DDOS attacks at two locations - azure isn't the only option either
Azure has multiple levels of protection against DDOS attacks
If you had 2 azure tenants you could effectively pay no additional running costs (just shut down the other when it gets attacked) and get 2 IP's to operate from - but refer to the first fact - Azure has multiple levels of protection against DDOS attacks
This first thing to do is work out how much operating costs are a year for the current host and then calculate from there
(I work in IT: I'm just throwing out a few bones, theres plenty of options here, budget being the main concern)
Admins at BGTSCC should use this calculator and do a 30 day trial

Thanks Gallimar, and everyone else providing ideas. We'll bring them to the talking table! (Although, in the future, it might be best to route ideas to us through PM. Our DDOSer is observing these forums, and very likely this thread in particular.)
