LOIC is free.
Compromised zombie machines are free (usually unpatched SMB XP machines).
Looping scripts pushing the salvos isn't time consuming.
Thids wrote:my IP ranges were blacklisted by the server provider
The IDS/SPI shouldn't be blacklisting normal traffic...

Assuming a 5mbps upstream, they only need approximately 200 nodes to stifle a 1Gbps pipe. Joe's DC doesn't guarantee 1Gbps, it's bursted (carrier hotels use this business practice to make a profit at an approximate 30% over subscription). If the pipe in is saturated, no amount of IDS, firewalls, or blacklisting is going to solve the problem, you'll need a bigger connection or a different IP.

People like this get thrills from frustrating other people. They like to feel like they're having an impact. So the best thing you can do as we harden our defenses is to not let them get under your skin.

Let them waste their money paying for attacks and their time initiating them. Don't let them waste yours. Maybe find something else to do for an hour or two whenever the server becomes unplayable? We'll do all we can do to get it back up and running as quickly as possible for everyone.
Very good advice. We all appreciate the hard work of the staff in dealing with this problem.

Its free but easy to identify the attacks since it cannot run behind a proxy. Its relatively easy to defend against LOIC

I would be very surprised if someone was smart enough to do it on their own and instead of using their mind to make money, they attack a small gaming community.

Probably he is not well up in the head and paying to get the job done. Probably he is paying for all the things that they cannot get

It'd require Joe's DC to run better mitigation, or consult with whichever upstream provider the traffic is originating from to block on their end (which HE definitely does not provide, at least in the 2010 timeframe).

I had a box sitting in the same row as the BGTSCC server, the DDoS situation with the NWN1 SWC PW played out similarly but that was two years ago.

Also, don't let FedEx ship assembled computers, they show up at datacenters looking like this.

 Good advice!

Anyways, the sad news is that another person with mental problems walks the earth. The bad news is that unless he gets medication, or his problems are escalated and get hospitalized ( or anything else ) we will have to expect more of this

This individual is probably more deserving of our pity than our scorn. Hopefully petty attacks on a server are the worst manifestation of his or her condition. Mental illness can be crippling.

I'm getting to the Nexus loadscreen, phase 1 and 2 area update complete, then it freezes, and soon disconnects. Anyone having the same issue, or any advice?

Anyone understand the mechanics of the attack? I understand NWN2 is very susceptible to those attacks, and many occur with characters loading in.

Packet flooding, the effect is to saturate the internet connection irregardless of what's running on the server in order to prevent traffic flowing to legitimate connections.

We can only ask for patience while we ride out this storm - and take what steps we can to minimise the effect of these attacks.
