Because they're rare. That's about it.

Rare.

When something is rare, people will want it. The rarer it is, the more they are going to pay for it.

In 2003, the RuneScape economy crashed because of too many imaginary pink party hats, which is still better than the reasons for some real financial disasters.

Player SixFeetUnder was trying to trade in a scythe, because even computer glitches love symbolism, when he accidentally worked out how to spawn any item in the game. Everyone immediately demonstrated their intelligence by relentlessly duplicating an item whose only useful property was rarity. The pink party hat went from being the most valuable item in the game to the least valuable hat. (This is why the blue hat is now the one worth $1,680, the maximum amount of money the game can hold.) It's now colored purple, but a full decade later, its value still hasn't recovered. But it never stopped being a symbol of how ludicrous video game finances are.
I believe King's Tear would go for at least 500000 gold. I've never seen one. On this server, anyway. Only heard of a guy who heard of a guy seeing one.

Gems have no real value above 1400 gold. People who collect them do so for rp reasons only.

Also, +4 breastplates are more valued than +4 cloth, imo, since most cloth wearers cast improved mage armor, which is +6.

Monks, rogues, archers. Breastplates are used by far less characters, since mithral versions or heavier armors are preferred for almost any build.

Hmmm, so what would you say the price for a +3 full plate armor with 60% weight reduction, and 20/- acid resistance is generally?

Not much, perhaps 8000 goldcoins. It's inferior because it doesn't reach the highest enchantment. +3 fullplate or +2 fullplate doesn't matter, as the character is likely to either use improved mage armor, magic vestment or blinding strike bracers anyway. The bonuses provided meanwhile are negliable. It's a high resistance, but towards an element few spells use so practically worthless in PvM. I wouldn't even buy it for 8k, but some people would.

A way to spot quality equipment is just to imagine them as level 30 equipment or not. Sometimes the player market surprises me though, like, boots with +3 con and +3 dodge is clearly an inferior item. Why sacrifice an extra 1 AC, which is important, to likely save an item slot (and even CON scores are more common than uneven ones as well)? It won't make up for that AC loss. How boots like that can sell for several hundred thousands of gold is beyond me, as there isn't a character that benefits much from it compared to level 30 equipment. However enough people think they're valuable, even if that value is only in that shared belief.

DMs can remove constitution bonus from items.

Well, then I have horseshoes. I sold one for 80k. Also, the Underdark has quite a few Acid damaging things(only more fire). Never leave home without either being resistant or immune to it.

Edit: What I use it for is so I don't have to have 5 energy immunity spells going, only 4 since the first 20 acid damage points do not count.

You might be right that it's not worth a lot. But a plain +3 full plate goes for around 8k.
It's a good armor before you can get some of the best.
A +4 Full Plate is worth 10 times that and a Mithral one is beyond manys reach.
So a +3 Full Plate with these extras it's worth more I would say.
Between 10-15k is a fair price in my book.
But of course to players who have way better it isn't worth buying.
But it is to a lot of others.

You're talking about the end items.
I've played on this server for years and never made it past level 24.
I would gladly pay good gold for an item that made my character a lot better at mid levels or early epics.
Of course the perfect items that complete a level 30 character is worth more... a lot more.
But that doesn't mean that lower ones are worthless.
And saving a slot can be very valuable depending on your build.
If you are a skill depending build you find yourself lacking slots.
+3 AC with good extras like +3 to an ability is definately worth investing in.
And then again. 200k for a pair of boots like those you mention is not that crazy when a pair of +4 boots goes for 800k+.
Besides their values doesn't decrease and you can always sell it later when you get more gold and can get the even better ones.

A +3 fullplate with goodies is easily worth 25,000. Yes, there are better ways to reach +4, but holding out for a +4 fullplate, or shelling out 120K+ for bracers of the blinding strike is not really worth it to many.

For many, a +3 fullplate is the last stop in armor.

To continue the discussion on +3 items. Not sure if it is true, but I have been told that loot is random and you could get lucky and get a +4 item from any chest, even the low level ones.

Assuming that is true, +4 items must be to the nth degree in rarity, because I rarely see a +3. and have never one time seen a +4 item, even for sale in the auction.

So I would suggest that +3 items do have worth. If I can trade up out of a +1 or a +2, I'm generally going too if it is beneficial for my build. Usually I am price conscious though and will watch for good deals I feel I can sell in the future to at least break even.

Another rare item - seems to be fair, to decent, belts and rings. Least when it comes to my rolls against the loot table.

+4 items can "drop" just about anywhere, but chests/corpses are much more likely (this is empirical experience).

Thing is, with so many players grinding away, it is actually much, much cheaper to just keep a regular eye on the consignment auctions for a +3 item, than actually spending coin on kits and potions/scrolls in order to do the Lootz Grinds Tour of Fame, yourself. 8-)

+4 items are extremely rare. At one point in the server's life, they did drop on occassion. Then an update went in, and now the +4 ability items are extremely rare. So rare in fact, that most of the +4 items that exist probably come from the tiny little window of when they had a higher chance to drop. +3 ability items on the other hand mostly come from the loot system, and there is often a +3 item for sale at the auctioneer among all the trash. Just by playing a bit every player will eventually get multiple +3 items, but the same can't be said about +4 items.

In the recent past, I saw a "Blackforest Staff", that can cast Protection of Alignment 3 uses per day, selling for 100,000. Was that a fluke or is that a common price for an item like that?
