Not exactly. You just need to know what to do against them. Go play a mage vs Mendel, and mrm3ntalist will destroy you. And it's not like Rangers are PvP monsters...it's about knowing what to do, and when.

Not to say mages need a buff, they're extremely powerful. But this looks like the "Amazing Neverending Spells Archwizard of Doom" :D. Come to think of it...I like it...yeeesss...
Actually if I made a mage here it would be a 70+ ac mage build with 30 CL.. that without PM which would lower the CL and DCs a bit but make AC insane.. I think that plus quickened interposing hand makes you pretty unhittable.. From there you just decide how to deal with that silly archer at your leisure.. But I don't build things like that on this server because I try to not be PvP focused.. but as it is a RP server, not a PvE server or a PvP server I believe all aspects should be considered for balance.. since both PvE and PvP are a part of RP.. ((And mages are also very powerful on a RP standpoint.. Try playing a monk in an event.. All you can do is spout off bits of wisdom and look stupid while the mages/priest/druids handle the real plans...I have high diplomacy though! Just let me find that creature that I can sweet talk and I will tear that up!...Or a mage can just charm monster it >.>))

((To further argue against mages not being able to have high defenses.. Add that 70+ AC to 4 base hps, +2 base con, +2 endurance, +1 Beetle, +2 Ring of the Knight (yes I realize the 2 con from the ring of the knight doesn't stack with endurance and the bonus hps you get is a bug, but either way it is there and exist, can't be ignored) yu get 11 HP per level.. That is actually the same as my monk and respectable IMHO))

My point though.. was that mages shouldn't become "Amazing Neverending Spells Archwizard of Doom".. Which is what I see as possible if reserve feats are made strong enough for mages to use them as an effective farming mechanic.

Currently you can just summon stuff, buff it, allow your summons to terrorize a dungeon and save your awesome nuking skillz for the boss at the end. In that way it is strong both on a PvE and PvP stand point.. And mage is the highest skill cap class in the game.. They don't mindlessly throw spells but choose when to use what where.. So again my point is to not make something -that powerful- mindless as well by giving them something they can spam over and over without any cost..

((Edit: Ohh did I forget dominate monster to add them to your friend's list? I don't know how effective that is here but I remember in NWN1 dominating a powerful creature, buffing it and having your summon to help you made an extremely effective tank line...))

Sure. And it would probably take forever to get to level 15. Because until mages are awesome, they aren't.

And that is fine, because they should have some draw back.. Never mind that you can RCR to level 20...

You're so bitter, it's hard to have a constructive dialogue. You should change the above with:
"mages are god in pvp" "no, they have their strengths and weaknesses. If you play against someone who knows them, it's easy to lose even as a mage"
and
the suggestion wizards are balanced because they have strong spells but limited in use and need to manage them carefully
What you said is a construct out of your own belief. Certainly not mine, and not what I said.
I find it bad form to talk about pvp and treat pvp like it's the plague itself, then concern yourself with balance from the pvp side of things. (no, this one is not directed at you in particular Aelcar, but at the community as a whole).
I'm glad, because I gladly talk about PvP for fun, I never treated it like the plague, and rarely proposed any balance changes for PvP reasons, if ever. Good it wasn't directed at me, LOL!!
Hey Aelcar, here's a bit of information no one else has probably ever dared to tell you: The world does in fact not revolve around you and the posts made on this forum are not always directly pointed at you and you alone. I will make sure to mark my posts that are not directed at you appropriately in the future, to make it easier on you.

Is this the part where I drop the "lel u mad" line or something? Idk, I'm trying to follow your format of "constructive" dialogue.
Yes, Thids. Yes. I've always been looking for a brave man like you to tell me exactly this. That NOBODY ever DARED to tell me (as if I were a Dreadlord, or something)...

Except, you quote my statements, you change them, and then you say "but anyway, it wasn't about you". Yep. Coherence :D. To be honest, it's more like "u mad?" rather than me, LMAO. When did you become this bitter?

Are the reserve feats a waste of time? In my opinion, yes. There is no mechanical reason to want them, they're a crutch at best, they become a burden later on.

As for your statement about people "having to play like me": I give my opinion, then everyone can do as they please. It looks like you just don't want me to have an opinion, or something.

On "seriously playing a mage", I could elaborate what I mean, but you don't like to play a character more than a few months, and not even exclusively, therefore it's not very useful to discuss the matter. Suffice to say:

-) your assesment on missile storms and blasting in general is wrong.
-) your assessment on mages tanking melee forever is wrong unless the melee monster or player just autoattacks
-) the ability to take out players with one spell has counterplay in every instance, and a high dmg melee can also kill a mage in one round.

These are instances. If you want me to explain you how and why, PM me.

You guys are a tad bit too sour, for a Reserve Feats thread...I hope you'll get online and have some fun, one of these days.

Technically, the Reserve Feats are equivalent to the Warlock's Eldritch Blast more or less.
Same damage, usually in an AoE that allows a save.

Resting and rebuffing all the time is not fun. Especially without Persistent Spell (you could at least buff yourself all day and then tank stuff, as a Wizard).

At 1-20 levels you basically do Eldritch Blast damage and it saves you on spells, even summons don't last for hours.

At epic levels you use them to get rid of the low-level monsters without wasting a couple or more spells every so often as you travel through transitions.

They have their uses but are useful pretty much only for Wizards, not even Sorcs and they are the only ones that can afford to spend a couple of feats on stuff like that.

Archaos it is not true that the Reserve Feats Warlock's Eldritch Blast , Warlock's Eldritch Blast have a range on 150 feet or more I cant rememeber it and for the Reserve Feats it is only one spell that send out a line of hit that is the Storm blot it have range 20 feet of electric long and still hit those that in the way and others Reserve Feats you hit very close so the monster hit you back Technically it is a dead trap for low lvls and Warlock's Eldritch Blast do lots more dmag to it never can be teh same

Eldritch blast does not have range of 150 feet. You're thinking about eldritch spear and its range has been reduced on this server to 35. IIRC Eldrtich Blast has range of 30 feet.

Acid splatter on arcane trickster deals more damage than raw eldritch blast without essences and shapes all the way up to level 22 where warlocks get Eldritch Master and start loading up on Epic Eldritch Blasts and only then they get more damage dice. After that it won't be really possible to keep up with warlock's eldritch blast dice.

Wizard5/Ro4/At10/SD3.
On level 12 you'll have 7d6 acid damage (3d6 sneak dice, 4d6 orb of acid) on level 22 you'll have 12d6 (7d6 from greater shadow conjuration and 5d6 from sneak attack, range 40 feet). The maximum achievable dice is around 16d6 or maybe more if it is possible to get epic sneak attacks. (nwn2db says you won't qualify for them)

For comparison, warlock without heritage feats will get 6d6 at level 12 and 10d6 at level 22.

The problem here is that warlock have AoE spells and chains (acid splatter is single target), controlling spells, essences that add more damage, warlock blast can crit (acid splatter can't) and will have wide variety of spell shapes and elements. AT blaster will be one trick monkey and most likely won't survive being surrounded.

Which is why I said this is a magical thief, not a proper wizard.

I am not a fan of reserve feats myself.Even if you try out Neginfinitys suggestion, I think it comes out a bit susceptible to dispels and poor positioning (needing to be able to sneak).

For playstyles, if you are going for a DC wizard or sorcerer, then damage isn't your thing. In a party everyone else does it better and your role is solely to disable, buff and be the crucial difference if things get a bit difficult.

If you play a blaster, like myself, I find that in a group I get off like, 1-2 spells per enemy encounter (which consists of 2-4 spawns). Would it be nice to have something with unlimited castings? Eh, sure. But you can buy a staff with unlimited magic missiles, and the difference between 10 or 30 damage isn't going to make a difference. Plus, I find that when I run out of spells, I can always rest again.

If I'm in an event or in an efficient group, as a blaster, I find that I don't get to cast many spells anyway. I just take up the job of a DC wizard, but poorer, casting disabling bigbys and the odd damage spell on an enemy worth a challenge. In the only event my sorcerer took part in, I only really got to cast epic mass heal and use healkits and healing scrolls on people. Imagine that.

Everyone has their own way to solo but given the areas where you're likely to survive as an epic mage, like the lizardmen cave, a simple summon and some offensive spells will usually last you until the rest timer is reset again. It can be more useful at lower levels, but in general I think one should take feats that are always useful, instead of feats that fluctuate in usefulness.

I would thus never include a reserve feat in any build I make. It doesn't help effective playing styles, it takes away a feat for you which can provide an everlasting bonus and it's largely negliable.

Nice post.

I'd like to point out, though, that the character I mentioned is more of a rogue and less of wizard. It is especially obvious when you run out of arcane trickster levels because at that point it might make sense to take remaining levels as a rogue.

So it is attractive only if you want high autonomy, lots of skill points and some arcane magic.

For powerful purely magical build that's not the way to go.

From an RP perspective the feat is OP. Faerun is a world where magic is, while not rare, taxing to control and use. Infinite spells per day is not something people can do unless they become masters. A feat that allows you to use mage at will, WEAPONISED magic at will, is incredible.

So good for RP, sucky for actual combat.
