As far as I go.. Either player side or DM side if someone starts RPing blood guts and gore in disturbing detail I am just going to log out.. If the server allows it it allows it.. Making the server PG 13 is far easier than saying it is PG 18 and then trying to micromanage every nuanced ruling as to what is too much.

I try to remain light hearted and joking, fun and in a youthful sort of way.... I can see that quickly getting ruined by allowing the server to "mature".. though I don't see needing sex and graphic gore and obscenities in a game as being a "mature" mentality in the first place..

While "needing" that sort of material certainly can't be construed as mature, needing it and wanting to allow it to happen when it comes up are not one and the same.

I also disagree with the claim that it would need to be micromanaged, simply enforce the FTB rule on scenes of graphic violence the same as for ERP... In addition, the party being tortured doesn't actually have to be present in game if they do not want to be subjected to that much of a graphic description. I myself (well my characters) have been the target of several gruesome encounters, and once it was clear that I was no longer able to resist my aggressors I excused my self (more out of boredom so I could keep playing) with the full understanding that I was at their mercy, no longer able to resist, and they could RP as if I was still present, doing as they wished to me.

If you are captured by some baddies, tied to a rack and tortured, by the time you are bound you are long past the point of resistance, just let them do as they please, and go do your own thing. They can't permastrike you anyway, so let them have their immersive evil RP while you go shopping in the gate for new clothes, or go loot running, or whatever.

And as mentioned before, a mature person is someone who can accept and understand that people around him or her may be made uncomfortable by certain things and is willing to do the mature, responsible thing, especially where there may be children involved, and not feel some... unusual... need to graphically act out such things.

As to this.. I don't know the ages of everyone currently playing but by raising the age limit you are saying anyone between the ages of 13-17, you aren't welcome here anymore, please leave, I don't care how much you have invested into the community.. I want my ERP and to simulate graphic, gory acts.

Several months ago before I became a DM I invited my youngest brothers to play with me here. They are twins and under the age of 18. When they log on it is a good chance for us to play together and hang out despite being a very long distance apart. If the server had been raised to 18+ then, I wouldn't have been comfortable inviting them to play with me.. especially since I wouldn't have been comfortable playing here myself at times.

Is this a serious question? Do we base our server's rules one the fact that a 7 year old could log on if they wished? No, we don't. So why does the statement that someone too young COULD log in bear any weight to this discussion, someone too young could already log in, are we going to change the server rating to G as a result of what "could" happen?

This actually brings up a pretty valid point, if we raise the rating would we then enforce age limits? We haven't been enforcing them so far to my knowledge, if 12 year olds have been playing without parental guidance.

I say no, the server rating should reflect the content you may potentially be exposed to, not dictate whether you are allowed to play here.

If I am having to witness it, then it is having an effect on me. You could say the same thing about anything.. Someone being hateful, or racist, or sexist to another person has no effect on you, so why should you care? Obviously it does have an effect on you.. It is called empathy... And to take it further.. My point was that I don't like the idea of RPing that kind of material when the other player could be a child.

I think we should absolutely be making rules with that in mind. It's not just an off chance that someone too young might disregard our server rating, it's the reality. This is still the internet. I'd be pretty comfortable betting Charraj's spellbook that underage players have logged onto ERP servers before, despite server ratings or whatever.

I mean, I can see the other side of this argument, and I even understand it. But my bottom line is this: I'm not going to RP in a place where kids are going to get exposed to ERP and other "mature" content. I am just not interested in being part of such a server.

For the frickin' MILLIONTH time...the Server is rated Teen.

Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language.

And if you take the bleepin' time to read up the description, you'll notice the not-so-random usage of "generally suitable," "may contain," and "and/or" aspects. What does that mean?

It means more guidelines than hard and fast rules.

Already, Players ERP on BGTSCC. I'm sure they also RP some sick-o violence stuff, and because IT IS between consenting individuals, it goes unnoticed and without problems.

But in actually going ahead and making it written-Rule-possible that these things ARE ALLOWED, like ERP, like Mature or Adults Only ratiings, then what you present is a paradigm of "if you play on this Server, you need to accept and deal with this level of X, Y, Z."

Honestly, one could still change the rating to Mature, and have 13 year olds gaming here, because there would still be "generally suitable" for 17 years and up...which is mighty different that stating "None under 17 allowed."

No matter what age you choose is right, or which ESRB rating you choose, the real issue is to what extent does BGTSCC promote itself, in terms of realistic or fantasy experiences in the digital world.

My thoughts are simply this: there is PLENTY of places on the Internet, and even using NWN2, in order to experience Mature or Adult Only content and RP/interaction. BGTSCC is of itself, and caters to a wider audience, which I sincerely hope is younger people who are getting into Fantasy RP gaming. Making the Server Mature or Adult Only themed sorta kinda may turn off the younger generation.

But maybe that is a fantasy in and of itself, and the Server is 99.9& populated by aging adults with needs to explore the Mature part of their inner-natures through fantasy CRPGs.

Still, BGTSCC is better off catering to the widest of audiences.

Well yeah, Echo, but these are characters being played by people, not people. The torture is just text. I can appreciate that you don't read those sorts of books or watch those sorts of movies, that doesn't mean I can't. If you can convince me enough people would leave over this to severely impact the server, ok, but I don't think thats the case, as i don't think most people who didn't want to deal with this sort of thing would ever see it.
