Correct me if I am wrong but I though vampires were essentially tied to the location near their resting place out of paranoia.
All vampires are bound to their coffins, returning to them when they are brought down to zero hit points (rather than being destroyed like other undead). This time period is critical however, the vampire though forced into its gaseous form and immune to any form of damage (Note, this only occurs when they are brought to zero hit points, not when it can change at will) has a limited amount of time to arrive at its coffin or be destroyed permanently. Even while it is at rest in its coffin, it is helpless for one hour while it reforms again, and then can heal normally. Because of this, many vampires have special defenses to protect them and their coffins. Common examples of this are having weaker undead as guardians, traps (both magical and mundane), or by simply placing their coffin in a room where only someone in gaseous form could enter.
Also they are not a race.

As a subrace I don't think it's a great idea, but if we could properly implement the mechanical side of vampires, with every benefit and every weakness, I think it could be a very interesting addition.

We would need special rules, lots of warnings, and the ability for a player to not consent to becoming undead, but if we pulled all that off it could add a bit to the server.

That said they would likely become commonplace and people would get tired of dealing with the snowflake vampires and random PvP. If we want to open that can of worms again lets just make it easier for drow to get to the surface, that way we get the same headache with less work on features.

Can I just say it only takes a single level 1 divination (Detect Undead) to trash all vampire RP?

If folks want to vamp, Sigil already has 3 vampire PRCs and the mature content settings to match.

it is not a race no, it would be

base race (any) subrace undead  type vampire

vampires get normal classes, sample vampires used in the MM are a male human fighter and an elven female monk

with detect undead being a divination and practically a short range scry, yea probably

however i can not recall the way nondetection is worded, but i know it hides from things like arcane eye and C&C, so with detect undead being more of a sense than an actual scry it would depend on the wording

One possible implementation to get away from the ECL/Subrace and subrace stuff, is to use the Libris Mortis vampire class (which would need to be taken fully before any other class is taken). This might also help to balance it, as it would spend levels as a vampire, leaving far less for other classes. In the end it would at most be at the same CR as any other character on the server.

For instance say the class has 8 levels (I don't remember off the top of my head, it might be 10 or 12...). That means you could for instance build something along the lines of duergar vampire8/fighter12/dwarven defender10.

If this was EVER to be implemented though, I'd restrict it to underdark characters at least.

I think I'd rather see Dhampir added instead. No vampirism or were contagions to worry about.

They also cast no shadow and have no reflection in mirrors. Kind of hard to hide.

Vampires would be cool but if were talking monster races I rather play a goblin.

The rp would just be sooooo bad

Maybe to a rare player as a DM reward/punishment. But then would come cries of favoritism.

Please no.

Concerns about racial PvP balance could be addressed with a lower level cap? Say max level of 15 or even 10.
It would focus rp into tribe mentality for things like goblins and kolbolds or convents for vamps.
