Re: 1 Minute Rest
I enjoy this video game because it is much closer to pnp D&D than any other game.
In PnP resting was not just about getting a good nights sleep. We are adventurers, we dont need no 8 hours every night!
An adventuring party would sleep on the hard ground, take shifts taking watch. Our sleep often interupted by goblin amushes. When the sun rose the wizards would start memorizing spells and the clerics would start praying.
If lucky the DM would say: "you slept through the night without incident and the studied and prayed for your spells"...the process would often take a lot longer than 8 hours in game. But to the players it only took a couple seconds (goblin ambushes aside).
What happens in our video game- We find a safe place to rest - it takes a couple seconds- then suddenly we are fully healed and have all spells memorized/prayed for.
The issue to me is that it is not realistic. It sometimes irritates me that someone can just plop down for a few seconds - make some snoring sounds then go from near death to full health- and also be able to recast all thier prepared spells.
So, find a safe place- start resting - rest duration based on your level - higher the level the longer the rest duration (it will reflect the number of HP's and spells you are studying/praying for). If interupted it should not reset timer- you would just carry on from where you left off until rest time is complete and you are fully healed and spells are prepared.
May not even need a timer between rests at that point. And it will pressure players to syncronize rests - to do it together. Seems simple to me - just extend the time it takes to rest based on level. Low level players will have a bit of an advantage - shorter rest times . Also would negate all those rest interuption bugs that cause your rest to be interupted.
That possible?

ToEE was much closer, just no MP. But metaquad is right; there are a huge number of differences to PnP.Tekill wrote:I enjoy this video game because it is much closer to pnp D&D than any other game.
In PnP, unless the DM has something planned for your rest, or rolls a random event, then you will simply be told something like, "You wake up refreshed and ready to face a new day". You won't have to wait 8 actual hours before you can resume your adventure.
In PnP you can attempt to rest anywhere. You might not like the results, but there's no restrictions on where you might try to rest. There's no rest cooldown; if your rest is interrupted you can try again immediately.
Rest on BGTSCC is nothing like PnP. Saying that resting for a minute instead of 6 seconds is more like PnP is a nonsense. The only question is whether the change to the rest system would improve things in some way. So far I've not seen any argument that suggests it would. BGTSCC forces you to go find a safe place, which adds more than a minute most of the time.
Interruptions resetting the cooldown is a different matter - is it really necessary when we already have restricted areas? I don't think it adds anything except annoyance and is certainly not PnP-like.
My conclusion is that the safe area restrictions, together with rest cooldowns, neither of which are found in PnP, are BGTSCC's way of trying to represent the problems of resting. We don't need any further hurdles to taking a rest. If the rest timer is to be changed then the whole system needs an overhaul.

It can get very annoying if you're a character that uses spells, in the higher levels, especially when a single misclick and you're screwed for 5 minutes.
I like this idea and would like to expand on it a bit. Maybe the rest timer if in an inn or perhaps by a tent / campfire (if survival check is passed when not in inn) is bypassed, otherwise 1 min/level? (or left as is, if that is more desirable) Perhaps the placeable tents could have a mechanic to roll survival if a character tries to rest when they're active?

In combination with flasmix's idea could be turned into something like this:NegInfinity wrote:Based off this idea:

How about allowing free rest or more frequent rest in taverns?
"Free rest" means you can rest there even if the rest timer isn't over yet.
"Tavern" means actual tavern room and not just taking a nap in the middle of tavern dining area.
"More frequent" could be many different htings. The resting timer could run faster while in the area, or resting could be allowed if at least one minute passed since the last rest. Or something along the lines.
The way I see it, it wouldn't make life harder for those who sleep in the wilderness or random locations, and at the same time it would give people plenty of reason to frequent taverns, possibly creating RP encounters.
Just thought it is an idea worth posting.
1. Free rest in tavern rooms (timer ignored or runs much faster)
2. Old rest mechanics in old safe locations.
3. Slow rest in unsafe areas (waste a minute, possibly affected by skills and possibly spawning enemies at you).
I wouldn't want any existing areas where rest is allowed to suddenly switch to one-minute rest, however.

Re: 1 Minute Rest
I seem to recall at one point a discussion around Lore:Nature and Lore:Dungeoneering having a mechanical impact on resting when traveling / in less safe locations so it leads me to believe that at a minimum there is the capability to implement some form of resting restriction that is relaxed based on skill checks.

As a player, I don't want to see any more mechanics monopolize even another minute of my time. Its a good idea, but no thanks.

Re: 1 Minute Rest
Not a fan of this idea myself. As has been stated already it can already be rather time consuming when in groups waiting for the casters to buff, or fighting back to a place where they can rest in order to buff.
It just doesn't seem at all necessary other than to add an extra layer of annoyance. Especially if you're disrupted during that wait and now the caster cant buff anyone causing an even longer wait.
Any group that wants to rp proper rests, is going to rp that regardless of mechanics.
I think the intention behind this idea came from the right place, but it just isn't practical or fun in any way.
As thorsson said it ain't broke..

Re: 1 Minute Rest
1) Remove time limit between rests (or reduce it to max 15 min at 30lv);
2) Add "racial" diffrent time to rest (f.e. human - 2 min, elf - 1 min, etc.);
3) Add "class" diffrent time to rest (f.e. 15%hp human fighter - 2 min, dwarf clergy 1 min);
4) Add "lvl" diffrent time to rest (f.e. 1-5lv 50% of full time rest, 6-10lv 70% of full time, 11-15 80% and 16+ 100%);
5) Add "create firecamp and survive skill allow rest in more danger places" (f.e. clergy human 24 lv have to rest in wild with no skill and such 3 min, with skilled ranger reduced to time similar like in Inn);
6) Set diffrent time in Inn, neutral area's, difficoult area and hardcore (all know what that would be..
);
7) Caster class with "craft item/potion/wand/scribe scroll" will create "thing" in 30 secs each (like that "new" crafting system has or resurection spell mechanic).
8) multiclass timing will be count as follow: (a + b)/2;
I like that Idea

Re: 1 Minute Rest
Many suggestions try to add realism and things like that to the game, but there is always a fine line between fun vs. realism.
In a video game environment, fun should trump realism and the idea of sitting there for a couple of minutes or whatever to show the need for a full rest really sounds not fun.
Better too to have the creative energies of the devs go towards additions that offer more fun and any necessary fixes than to play with something trivial which, as a previous poster said, is not broken nor really harming anything the way it is.

Re: 1 Minute Rest
The whole basis for the proposition is based on this: (the reason to change)
The goal of this would be to help eliminate casual, OOC and prettymuch metagamed rests.
Personally I don't see this achieving that goal. All it will achieve is those casual rests now taking 10times as long.
If you want to reduce the necessity for rests you need to address the issues that cause them.
Such things would be:
- buffs have too short duration
- dungeons contain too many monsters for their level
- DM events spawn too many creatures that deplete spellcasters.
- the need to farm on the server to advance in level
Buff duration
This is largely because typing and having a long conversation easily takes way longer via text than in person & buffs don't take account of this. Therefore what might be a 10 minute conversation face to face could easily take over an hour in nwn. This means those 1min / level spells that were active have now faded & this forces a 'casual' rest.
Dungeons contain too many monsters for a characters level
This is fairly self explanatory but if a dungeon or DM event are frequently exhausting players and rests are not intended, the challenge is not being pitched at the right level.
DM events spawn too many creatures that deplete spellcasters
Same as above however this is harder to judge as its very subjective - some casters make far more efficient use of their slots than others & a DM might want to stage a battle that is a struggle for resources etc.
The need to farm
BGTSCC makes players to farm to a level that alikens it to old school MMOs (in case I'm not being clear here, this is bad design)- I understand that players aren't forced to, but you only have to be squished a few times by a +++ challenge in a DM event to want to at least feel adequate to Feel like you are able to contribute. (Queue someone telling me a level 1 char can contribute...
).
The intended effect (making level progression slower is therefore replaced by farming) and as a result this means casters need to take these 'pseudo' rests to keep up.
In closing - your not offering a solution to your perceived problem, (your only proposing to make it worse). A far better idea would be to address why issues like the above arise and how they could be better implemented and how the need for these casual rests could be better handled.

Re: 1 Minute Rest
I agree with everything lilani said, but would like to add that specifically for DM events it is important to do this because otherwise divine and arcane gish types overshadow fighter types in every way. Making them conserve spell power and not be able to use 12 buffs at a time is one way to allow the true melee types to shine a bit. Generally running out of spells is less a concern for 'true casters' in that they generally won't waste many/any spells on trash mobs and will have plenty to unleash on the sub-bosses and final boss.lilani wrote:DM events spawn too many creatures that deplete spellcasters

lilani wrote: - buffs have too short duration

These are two key points for me as well in every server I have ever played on.
I like to RP a lot when I am "exploring" with others. A 60 sec/level spell is easily eaten up by a couple of stops to RP. A solution to that is to not RP during exploration, but simply rush from Point A to Point B to Point C and save RP for the campfire so that one's spells can have the most effect. But that is not fun and spontaneous RP can lead to amazing stories! Casual rests are pretty much the OOC understanding of this and allow for the RP aspect to remain whilst also allowing a caster to not neuter themselves by having all of these useful tools which is their reason for existing, but not being able to use them because doing so would waste them.
DM events are another thing where it is nice to be able to pause a short moment and refresh oneself (unless the event is specifically designed to not do so, which can be fun, since resource management can really make even mild challenges quite difficult and fun). Many DM events I have been in see multiple phases to the event. Being a caster who used ever trick they had in the book (for wizards, this is a literal thing) to survive and help the group in Phase 1, then for Phases 2-4 having to sit back and look pretty because they are out of spells pretty much sucks. A quick rest to refresh allows them to be a part of the event and game once more.

Re: 1 Minute Rest
For me people just "use to" rest that way and thats all.. that change should hurt only grinders (including me) and give one more reasons to group up...
There shouldnt be any problem to add to DM tools commend to RP rest (6 secs), DM's also could think about casters in that way, after all they are adult and inteligent people
I'm not say its a "must have" change but will be fun to see that in game
