100% agree with everything mrm3ntalist wrote. If anything I would maybe say there's almost too much democracy on this server.

I will comment from my own server.

We don't use SVN or have any kind of "builder module" that anyone can pick-up. Pretty much the server module is behind a lock & key and only maybe 2 other people have it. The reason behind that is a lot of stuff is proprietary (stuff KEMO made years ago) and/or server exclusive. You basically have to live in the reality that one day somebody might go off the deep end and you'll find your module up on the vault or something. The reason for this is that I don't have a large enough staff (or really a big list of things that constantly need fixing).

I personally do about 95% of my servers programming/bug fixing myself. You break stuff and learn how to fix it; just how things go in this field of work. The other people I assign stuff to work on projects and they send it back to me once it's completed. I have a fully functioning copy of my server module on my local PC which I use for any kind of bug testing. So I script, bug test, and guinea pig myself to make sure everything's running. I've accumulated an extensive knowledge of stuff in regards to the server and I have the advantage of being able to do this myself because I work from home so when it's slow for a few hours each day I can just poke away at it.

Server crashes? Hate them with a passion.

I'll give props to Maecius/Endeylon and their devs for busting their butts off making sure everything's running.

I think Maecius looks and sounds like Stephen Fry. Whenever he types something I read it in his accent

Thanks ComeAndSee, appreciate the feedback. As an Area Dev for Haven as well, even I did not get a copy of the builders module there, so I can back this up too... The thing is though, the reasons already known, I didn't even need to question it. :)

I also agree with what mrm3ntalist said above.

Thanks for your kind words and for chiming in, ComeAndSee.

And thanks for all the suggestions from everyone on process improvement. I've also received a lot of very good thoughts in PMs, and I'd like to thank those of you who sent me those as well.

I'll probably close this thread down this weekend, but I'll leave it another day so that anyone who hasn't shared ideas or thoughts on how to improve the server just yet still has a chance to do so.

I think that keeping that thread updated would be the most sensible compromise. I have had my spats with what I percieve to be a power clique here but I can also understand the desire to keep some discussions under the hood. Gamer1234 might not want people to know they want ____ buffed and ____ nerfed. Admins may not want gamer1235's ban discussed. Volunteers might not want PM's about half finished projects.

Maybe add one new staff member who will have the job of keeping track of all the projects and updating that thread. It would be a good opportunity for an unskilled volunteer to help out.

Sigh....

SVN is not Git, and has inferior branching support.

The repository is not visible, there are no mentions of it anywhere online, and no guidelines to gaining access, no submission guidelines, nothing. I did find my own thread where I asked to put the code under version control.

My opinion is based on past attempts to interact with dev side of things, which were mostly a negative experience. If you don't like the opinion, do something about the process.
You know, it is entirely possible to give your opinion or share your expertise without being rude or utterly condescending. It is possible you don't know this however, as virtually everything you've written in this thread has either been rude, condescending or both.

These people are *volunteers*. They are *unpaid*. That is *every* reason for things to take a long time, and for it not to be AAA studio work. I'm not quite sure what your issue is, but you aren't helping anyone with your tone and your shitty attitude.

I'm thinking that 24 hours without a post suggests that this thread's kind of run its course. I'm going to lock it and bookmark it for now.

I had several good ideas, both public and private, come of this; so thank you for those of you who had suggestions. I've actioned several of them already.

I also had some suggestions that I will not be taking up, mostly because I don't agree that they'd be helpful or good for the server, but that's OK. I still appreciate their being suggested, even if we're not going to act on them at this time.

All in all, I'm glad I was able to get some feedback and some ideas on ways to improve the server. BG:TSCC is an ongoing experiment, and a forever growing and changing server. But with all of us playing a part in its future, I'm sure we'll see it live on for months or years to come.

 Hopefully I will get to retire before the "years to come" part comes to pass though ... !
