There is some truth to the idea of RL gear. It allows gold to disappear never to be seen again. Secondly, it allows a player to have a tangible reminder of their time that went into the server.

The real commodity on a server like this is time. Everything about a character = time. The story, gear, gold, and XP all equal a player's time. It's the common denominator for all players. To strip a PC or delete (note: Language in link) it outright is stripping someone of their expense in time.

Certain things reduce the expense of time. Adding stores like Avernus reduce the amount of time someone used to spend to get the same gear. Finding a chance loot drop that sells for millions cuts time (if you get it early on).

What BG tries to do is allow players to spend their time in a way that is fun to each. Efficiency for this commodity looks different and will never be "balanced" because to make one thing more efficient, for example XP, may look cheap to others.
