This is a game. Having time to play it is a luxury. It’s not work, forced, necessary or actually important in any way but entertainment. Not to forget to mention that this game is more or less completely free to play, and open to you any time of the day with little to no inconvenience!
On a related note: we are just damn lucky beyond words to have many individuals—past and present—who give us their time and energy so we nerds can have our fantasygoodtimesentertainmentescapism! DAMN LUCKY!!!

Re: death penalty at 30
Being thrown back to farmlands or FAI is penalty enough for me. 9 0f 10 times I log off after death. The adventure failed and I feel like I lost this time. I would be fine with a 3000gp penalty as I don't care much about it anyway. So it would make not much sense to mule your gold to another pc as the 3 k you often make just by picking up gold loot on your way to death.
I wonder if some of you ever played a lvl 30 char who died several times of the bad mechanics, laggs or just player's stupidity? If not, how can you say how it feels to play and die at lvl 30? It is not like you don't be careful to survive at lvl 30. Dying is always a defeat, with or without extra penalty.

Your character is not you and this IS a game.Hoihe wrote: Take a crapton of time to get. Time isn't infinite (unless you're a lich or something like that).
If you're the type to wear your character's skin, then simply wear a new one after your character's demise.
See, you're supposed to have fun in the process, no matter what. If your play experience consits mainly of fear of losing all of it, something's wrong.
Death rarely happens to my characters, and I tend not to die several times per session.Touri wrote:I wonder if some of you ever played a lvl 30 char who died several times of the bad mechanics, laggs or just player's stupidity? If not, how can you say how it feels to play and die at lvl 30?
But, yeah, death does have tendency to indicate "time to take a break".

Making XP is almost never fun. Sometimes the action related can be fun, but making large amounts of it is pretty much drudge work.
Making gold can be fun, especially if you play a merchant and doing barters is fun.
Regaining items/XP requires you to do something that the overwhelming majority of the time is not fun. Thus, you lose time you could be spending having fun.
Adventuring in a realistic manner does not net anywhere the amount of XP/Gold to get to level 30 within 3 months, or maybe even a year.

Re: death penalty at 30
Why not loss of 1 equipped item at random. Several other games have implemented this with success.
To me, remove loss of XP and forget gold. Lose 1 equipped item and add it to a server bank where random epic mobs (or ones responsible for the death) have a greater chance to drop said item.
And add in death recovery penalties: You died? Item loss and penalty timer. Not just level 30's, everyone. It's really one of the few middle grounds I can think of.

Re: death penalty at 30
You want to make level 30's lose items at random upon death?
Um... Well, okay. Next time you die, roll a 1d12. 1 = amulet, 2 = cloak, 3 = gloves, 4 = top ring, 5 = bottom ring, 6 = helm, 7 = armor, 8 = belt, 9 = boots, 10 = mainhand, 11 = offhand, 12 = reroll. Empty slots rolled = reroll. When you die from now on, roll 1d12 and delete the item you rolled via campfire, just as an experiment to see how enjoyable this idea is. It doesn't matter what the cause of death is: lag, PvP, a whole mob of gold-named mobs appearing in an area you were exploring. Delete that item.
I would surmise it's not very enjoyable.

It's not deleted, its recycled into the area where the player died at an increased chance to be dropped. And yeah, lag is and has always been a leading cause of death since the internet was invented.
As for gold's spawning, sound's like a decent and unexpected turn of events to me, seems exciting.
If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Running away will become a thing. And cautious adventure.
Or.....not.

Re: death penalty at 30
I'm not averse to risks being in the game, but I think item loss is a poor one. It'll only expand the gap that exists between long-time players and new players; a veteran player will have oodles of gold with which to buy the lost item back, most likely, and be less likely to die in the first place. A new player will not have oodles of cash and will not even have the same quality of gear to begin with.
This isn't tabletop. In tabletop I've played at tables where monsters actively went out of their way to sunder magical items if they knew they were going to die. I've lost characters I put a lot of time and thought into and happily just rerolled because the dice landed so or I made a bad decision or my party members made a bad decision. That's different.
This is a persistent world. It obeys different rules than tabletop, and even acts in real time (rather than everyone taking turns). I think item loss on death is a bad idea here.

Re: death penalty at 30
Not to mention it gives 30's a reason to play careful and not just wander into their death for the lols.
All around, someone else's bad day is also someone else's good day. Lost your greatsword? Someone else will find it. Use your dragon hoard amount of gold and go buy a replacement.
Is it perfect? No. Is it a suggestion? Yes.
At least its not the same old tired XP/Gold circle talk that keeps going....
and going....

Re: death penalty at 30
I haven't had a death due to lag myself. Most of my deaths are me finding out what new areas are like, or from me being an idiot playing solo (or a party member doing something awful). But go back and read my last post and tell me if you can deny that an "item loss on death" situation would, in fact, increase the gap that exists between people who are new to the server or game and people who are veterans with lots of gold.
I think the potential loss of a new player's key items would be really, really bad for the player and the server. The impact would be far lessened on those who have been here longer.
There are better penalties for level 30 characters to be devised. I say go back to the drawing board and find another solution than goodbye magic item.
A bad solution would be worse than no solution, especially since you want to apply THIS death penalty to characters of all levels.
