While working through an RCR, I realized that I try to pick my regional languages anyway, so getting them for free from a regional background would be an unfortunate overlap.
Most likely not, unfortunately. There's some possible complications that could come up with resetting a character's languages. I can look into it after I'm done with everything else, but it's low priority atm.
Steve wrote: Sat Jul 24, 2021 9:07 am It would be fitting that the Gur are added, since Baldur’s Gate is one of the few settlements in which the Gur have a consistent population.
Possible for the future but right now focusing on the ones given in Player's Guide to Faerûn before expanding to anything else.

Heartlands is Gur territory though, so... you're right, it'd be a good idea.

Not sure when the language selection popup appears normally, but perhaps it could be used using a check before/acter the feats are given?
A simple flow could be:
1) count how many languages the PC currently has.
2) Count the number of languages the background adds (not including automatic racial or Common, presumably manually set per feat).
3) add them together for expected languages.
4) give the PC the feat and attached languages.
5) check the PC's current languages against the expected total from Step 3
6) If the number of known languages is less than expected, then popup the language selector for the difference.

This would hopefully avoid any weirdness caused by PCs having acquired languages from race, class, or RP, but still get the benefits of their regional background.

I suggest calling these human regional variants just that, or cultures or something equivalent, but not subraces. They are not subraces as such. Imaskari is the only human subrace available even after this nice little addition.

Why not "ethnic groups?"

I'm going strictly by what the FR sourcebooks call it, and not by real-world Anthropology terms or 21st century socio-linguistic fads, so Wikipedia is a poor source to consult for all things D&D. With that said, "ethnicity", as used in such books as Races of Faerun, is indeed one of the correct terms which I did not name, but nevertheless implicitly covered by saying "or something equivalent".

It might be indeed too much of subraces (especially since they don't differ mechanically), but this project doesn't hurt either, it simply adds optional diversity to your character building (and custom race icon / character vault banner too 8-) ). Beside, it has the future potential, such as minor racial adjustments and what not.

About backgrounds. As I see it, the new system lets you combine ethnicity + culture. For example, a mulani human being raised at Rashemen and other shenenighans.

The word subrace isn't used in-game much, if at all, I don't think. I use the descriptions from sourcebooks. Most human subrace descriptions use the phrase 'ethnic group'. I'm just using 'subrace' in this capacity as they function by the subrace 'mechanics' in NWN2. As you say, Deep Imaskari are the only "true" subrace, so only Deep Imaskari have different racial traits from other humans. All of the other ethnicities are identical to each other in terms of their stats, though they do have different skin/hair/eye colors.

In other news, Steve got us to relent and so we've added a few more. Bedine, Ffolk, Gur, Shaarans, Turami, Ulutiuns, and Vaasans have all been added, as these groups have significant populations relatively near the Western Heartlands. Groups from further out may be added later, but are lower priority.

This would be nice as it would give stouts a deity of magic.

Not happening for now. Maybe later. I need to stop adding more things to my workload so if I add this it'll be after everything else on my plate is done.

For dragon clerics, at least, seeing as they're the only ones that can pick him.

Ulutiuns are found in Frozenfar/Icewind Dale.

Shaarans are found in Lake of Steam, which is next to Calimshan. They're also described as being found as far west as Calimshan and as far north as Vilhon Reach. It's at the very edge of what I'd consider "close", but still closer than other groups we have like Mulan and Rashemi.

... also I might have confused the Deepwash for the Lake of Steam. I knew from my Tethyr knowledge that Lake of Steam bordered Erlkazar, but I forgot which side.

Anyway, I used this map to determine what is 'close'. Probably should have had Lantannas, actually.

Either way, it's looking like we might be able to get all of the human ethnicities in, so won't actually matter. Outside of the 'main seven', I sorted them in order from nearest to furthest for sake of determining priority.
