I felt *very* awkward when I first started here, especially since this is the first time I've done online RP. What I've learned is that it is much easier for me to RP with brash/antogonistic PCs, since they can barge their way into conversations a little more easily.

With my non-insane PCs, I have a slightly harder time of it, but I find the best way to initiate RP is to start off with a greeting, then an observation/question about the other PC.

My biggest problem is staying interested in any one character, which isn't helped by horrible lag/population cap that keeps me from enjoying the game. Luckily that will be changing soon with the new server.

Ah yes... the dirty little secret of high charisma. People love to talk about themselves. If you play a character with a high charisma, just go around and ask other PCs about their characters IG and people will percieve you as likeable and Charismatic. :)

One problem I have found as late is that due to the limitations of using text to RP, it is very difficult to show emotion without "overplaying" it. My character was wracked with remorse a short time ago, and I realized that it is quite hard to play that without seeming almost out of your mind with remorse. In order to communicate a level of emotion, you have to kind of.... go over the level you are wanting to show. So I was thinking, would emotes combined with /tells be a better way to do this? Perhaps some skill rolls for those you are RPing with? Wisdom checks or such? And then you send a /tell to describe what the character seems to be feeling? What do you lot think? Any advice? Anyone else experience this trouble?

For that one, it depends on who your rping with...

If it's someone who knows your style, go for it.

If it's a group around the fire you hardly know, be less agressive b/c if they don't know you, your style, or your character, it comes off over the top.

I used to do the same thing.

It's like having friends, you'll do more/say more in your circle of friends than you would if your around others your not comfortable with.

I've used tells in the same sort of situation you are refering to, BoC, because you are right, without writing a small novel it can be hard not to go over the top in an emote. When in doubt, one could also use a skill roll on the part of the other PC's involved and then a tell, but it may be simpler and maintain RP flow better to avoid that. I agree with SFS on his point, as well.

BoC, I believe I know the situation your talking about, and from my point of view you pulled it off very well. Didn't seem over the top to me at all. *two thumbs up*

Personally, I use emotes to just say what Abby's emotions are... rather than trying to describe them.

So while you could say: "Collette begins to shudder as sobs wrack her body, before long, snot is funneling from her nose and her mascara runs down her face like some kind of Heroin addicted stripper in a bathroom stall"

I prefer to say: "Collette looks miserable."

A lot of people love to load the adjetive shotgun and let the descriptors fly... I prefer quick and easy.

It's easier for me too, because it's less words to put in the google translator >_<

But I think that depends from most people. If you'r typing fast, describing what your char do in details make it more "real". But for me, who have to think twice and use a damn translator to say some things, it's not fast enough and the time I got it written the people are gone or talking about something else, hehe.

So, short = easier and still fun.
Detailed = more realistic and fun.

I think its more for newer RPers who want feedback on their role playing or characters.

Sign me up then. I am not used to RP'ing in forgotten realms settings. I would like some feedback on how my rp is.

Same here. Got many years of RPing, but in english it's my first time, so I don't know if what I say always sounds in the good timeline.

Mine should be terrible for the same reason than Randall's. That's why I made a foreginer character :P
