Whaaaaaaaaat. We have Shou now? Do we have to rcr? I only have one character who is supposed to know Common and Shou and rcring at level 6 would be a nightmare.

You can find the languages list here:
http://bgtscc.wikia.com/wiki/Languages

I think a DM may be able to give you that language, although I'm not positive on it. (not positive if they can do that or know how to)

We're working on getting the gibberish functioning again - there's a small language container issue <_<
People can still translate what you say until that time, luckily :)

Thanks Rasael. Guess I'll try to find an all-knowing DM.

I think maybe a system where characters (Humans), can take an extra language with even +0 int ( limited to regional languages like Shou, Thay and ETC) would be useful.

These languages are now working.

I'll look at regional languages and allowing them to be added to level 1 characters.
I'll also have that script check to make sure higher level characters have all appropriate languages such as Drow Sign language and Undercommon. Arcane for Wizards. Druid and Animal for Druids etc..

Likely we will have an NPC for that in the Nexus sometime.

A question.

I did not find much info about language predominant on territory of regions like Kozakura, Wa, Koryu. Help please?

Kozakurans speak Kozakuran and Wanese speak Wa-an. I would imagine there might be overlap between the Kozakurans and Wanese language wise. Since they are both based on Japan and Japanese culture, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume some overlap with Shou as well, given the real Japanese actually borrowed a large portion of their language from the Chinese (the kanji part) and made alterations to it.

Not sure bout Koryu.

Also just checked the supported languages list and it doesn't include Wa-an, so if you were to make a character from Wa, I think Kozakuran would be your best bet. Like I said, there is likely a language overlap due to not only proximity, but the similarity in cultures. They're both basically real-world Japan.

Basically, they are not real world Japan. Those are Wa and Kozakure, one is based on feudal shogunate of Tokugawa, another takes for example more Shinto religious government model. Key word is based on.

Thanks for clarifications on language.

I didn't mean present-day Japan obviously. Otherwise we'd have a manga-reading salaryman as a class. And yes, I meant based on Japan.

The new languages have been updated to work better with reading signs ( .... or !, ? . etc..)
-What would happen was that words got cut out if a reading sign was used

We can now focus on adding new words and such if any suggestions are made.
Hopefully we'll also have an NPC to fix character langauges and perhaps give one free roleplay choice.

I would love to see an NPC go in for the RP choice, mostly for the regional languages.

Really?! Can anyone confirm please?
Ithilan wrote:Is there any clarification on Lore skill vs. Language usage? Id really like to see something on this. Possibly DCs added to given languages if Lore is eligible for "understanding".. I see people that obviously dont have X language respond to people using it, based entirely on their lore skill.

I personally ignore all succesfull lore checks, and only RP languages I can speak as well. It makes no sense you can "understand" fragments of a language but not speak it to the same extend.
I can i.e. understand quite a bit of german IRL, which is why I can also speak it partially.

But since I have no idea what russians are saying, I cant pronounce more than two commonly words and could deffiantely NEVER eavesdrop on a conversation between two.

Is it possible for the staff to make a ruling on this or discuss it with eachother, been bothering me a while now.

Thanks in advance.
The example with russian made me laugh. Half of my family speak russian while I don't. If you don't have someone to translate, you'll just have to do with gestures, voice tone and these type of words that have a common base in most languages. I believe that even if you can't speak a language, being exposed to it for some time will make you understand it. I can see this on two of my brothers who don't speak Estonian, but its the mothertongue for my mom, elder brother and myself. If we want to talk about things we really don't want them to understand, we have to be clever and use difficult words (uncommon words) and disguises. They really can't speak estonian but the extent of which they understand it amazes me. Someone mentioned swedish, a language I know, and it is indeed the case that a swede will understand northern swedes but not speak the dialect themselves, and will understand norwegian and parts of danish (in writing and speech) but not speak it themselves. Estonians will for example understand finnish as they are related languages. Mind you, russian, swedish and estonian do not belong in the same branch of languages, these differ very much from eachother.

For any language though, gestures and the tone of voice can say a lot. If someone is plotting to harm you in your presence, you will know by the tone of voice, the malicious intent and probably the odd calculating look that you're in trouble. Sympathy and kindness are especially powerful. Its difficult saying nice things in a negative voice and vice verse.

I didn't mean to write this much, I'm no language expert but the topic interests me. For IG purposes, the use of lore to understand a language is flawed in a way that we can understand it either not at all or 100%. In the cases of 100%, I really like the examples by Considerate:
Considerate_ wrote:Example1:
Unknown language: "Hehe, let's kill that idiot with the top hat!"
Lore check passed - kill - top hat.
Conclusion: They're going to kill the guy with the top hat!

Example2:
Unknown langauge: "Let's ensure the handsome fella with the top hat sleeps with the fish, shall we?"
Lore check passed - top hat - sleeps - fish.
Conclusion: They're talking about the guy with the top hat, wants to take a nap and go fishing.
Seeing as the server is RP focused, people will simply have to RP not knowing the whole extent of what someone says in a language even though it shows complete. The more languages your character knows, the more easier they should be able to pick up words from other, unknown, languages...

While I'm typing... How hard is to get an extra language granted by a DM? Is it still as it says in the first post? I'm of course thinking of draconic for my character, I wasn't aware at character creation about the intelligence score and adding languages so I'm curious.

You have to quote all of it for that one to make sense Nomster

If instead of writing:
"Hey, we totally should go out for a trip in the city. You know, to pick up some provisions and stuff. Oh did you hear about that accident by the river?"

You split it up in three (which you often have to, because the translator don't allow -that- much text to be written in it)
"Hey, we totally should go out for a trip in the city. >>"
"You know, to pick up some provisions and stuff. >>"
"Oh did you hear about that accident by the river?"

Voila, three times the chance of getting RP XP! =)

Edit: Personally I tend to put in a ">>" for others to see I'm not done typing.
