Had anyone looked further in to the cost of ddos mitigation service? Did a bit of hunting around on Google search today and saw a couple forums discussing cost and effectiveness and it seemed that ddos protected servers are supposedly not much more than standard...maybe we already have these, but the attacker is just more sophisticated? Is there no way for or server provider to track/report the ddoser?

It's basically a question of how big the hammer is. The more of a pounding a server can take, the more expensive the DDOS protection. But you can answer it by launching bigger (and also more expensive) DDOS attacks.
So it ends up as a war of attrition. Can one side shrug off the attacks? Can the other overwhelm with bigger and bigger attacks?
There's little sophistication in the process. Which is probably why it's such a popular form of attack. It's easy to do.

Unfortunately that is not easily accpmplished due to spoofing ip's and botnets.

There were reports of lag prior to the last reset and I am unable to login now so yeah, my guess is we are currently suffering another DDOS.
