Narawien Xilaben and Xercia Dantress might have something to say against this statement

Hehe. There is doubt that starting at level 7+ any caster, unless built horribly and with no clue about spells, will begin to outshine any other build. But as a whole, when counting downtime and getting to and past the sweetspot for casters, any non-buffing UMD-based build will be better and quicker as long as you avoid anything that don't have "Save-or-Die" spells.

Thing is, wizards are quite powerful in the UD, followed by long range characters.
Played well, one can hunt enemies that give 50 XP with no risk except for when it lags. The reason is that a low level group of monsters move very slowly, allowing easy kiting (Umberhulks and Carrion Crawlers).
As for mages and downtime, use AoEs. A classic technique is to buff to high heavens for AC and displacement, run around the map then throw AoEs that can't hurt you. A dirty trick can be to cast PoA of the same alignment as yours, then drop a Noxious Cloud. Afterwards, even a wolf can murder most things.

The UD is not really any different to the surface in what can and can't work, the only real difference being your choices are far more limited as to where you can go at any given level. One of the best ways to achieve power does seem to have Xilaben as your last name...

Best thing to play in the UD?
Anything really, just find its strengths and where you do not get killed too quickly.
Being a caster always help, so does having at least 13 UMD.
Ive played melee "fighters" into level 30 who did 10-20 damage per hit.
What is easy to play is another question but some answers to that question:
Favored Soul
Cleric
Gish fighter or rogue
Archer
CON fighter
Warlocks are popular too.
Rogues need a bit of tinkering but can be downright wicked.

House Xilaben is populated by Pyro's characters, they have a knack of destroying the Dev Teams hard work

If facing any member of the House of Xilaben, expect it to excel at its profession in the extreme. At least if the player behind the toon is Pyro.
The House members are rumoured to have a continuous mortal grudge with the pitfiend below the illithid mines.
Known members of the House include powerful warlocks, gishes and at least one weaponmaster of indecently high prowess.
Pyro is one of the few people I talk to when I need some odd character concept to work mechanically as well as conceptwise.
Somehow I always end up not listening to all the clever things he say for concept reasons but still.
He is also a great roleplayer when he so choose.
Pyro, dont blush mate, you have earned the credit many times over.
@Servin: Is that you or that wierd fanged bat talking?

When I need inspiration I look at Thorson's builds in the builder.
I personally have many UD builds public under the name Lambert.
I've found that sometimes what wins is the patience of the PvPer as well as understanding your opponent.
I played a low ab ranger blackguard dual wielder with divine might in dale lands that was hunted by all the UD there for about four months. I killed, evaded, and tricked them until they gave up. Quite an epic prolonged pvp action. I got tired if pvp after that, but it was fun. The secret is to never allow your opponent to pick the time and place of the battle. You choose the time and place, use surprise and other players to your advantage. I suspect there are different styles of PvP. I am only familiar with the evasion hunting type.
