Flasmix wrote:Almost five hundred people gathered to bear witness to the sermon of Brother Ameris of the Temple of Ilmater. The crowd huddled together tightly to be able to hear the priest speak. A vial of potent Alchemist Fire was hurled into the middle of a large group of citizens. Over sixty men, women and children lost their lives. Most of the bodies were missing limbs or carried hideous disfigurement to make identification near impossible. The streets were a chaotic mess afterwards, with the survivors fleeing and screaming to their homes. A group of adventurers took the wounded to the Temple of Ilmater while others stayed back to help clean up the dead. One, notable figure, being the golden haired Liam, leading the effort to clean the streets of the hideous scene.

The few that survived, close to ten, take shelter at the Temple of Ilmater where they're healed, monitored and fed.

The city watch has begun hanging bounty notices for the criminal known as 'James the Barber'. The same serial killer who is suspected of leaving a body by the Temple of Ilmater less than a week ago. Information shows that he's a known serial killer who appears in cities and villages after they've been devastated by a crisis of sorts. He is known to target the poor, homeless and those who help them. The Barber is said to be responsible for the attack which took place. The current reward is 20 bags of coin.

As the dust begins to settle, the homeless and poor stay in their homes or shelters. Most are too frightened to leave as they fear they'll be the next victims of The Barber.
Notices bearing a stylisied broken rack, the symbol of Ilmater, appear around the city, replicated with the facilities of the Baldur's Gate Herald. They are posted here and there, at random, so that those going about their daily business might see them. A number of adventurers of different faiths are seen posting them up, as they patrol the streets and seek out the fearful poor and homeless, distributing food and healing as they are able.

And meanwhile, alms distributions continue, with the clergy and the alms-givers hired distributing out the faith food as before.

The notices read as follows:

Harken, people of Baldur's Gate

The city is wounded by the actions of a cruel and base man; yet it Endures.

The Ilmatari are bloodied by this affront to the ideals of Ilmater; yet they Endure. They are without fear.

The Broken God's house still stands, and the Brothers and Sisters within remain committed to the war upon suffering.

This Barber calls those who suffer leeches; the Ilmatari call them meek souls who need a helping hand.

The Ilmatari remain committed to giving it, just as they ever were.

If your heart bleeds for the sufferings heaped upon your fellow Baldurians lift your voices in prayer to the Broken God.

Give up your coin to buy alms and supplies for the needy.

Commit your bodies to providing aid; come to the Temple and assist in charitable efforts or just, in your own lives, show compassion to those you pass.

The Barber is an enemy of human mercy. Show him he has not won.

In the Name of Ilmater the Wise, the Merciful, the Enduring.

A new poem has been winding it's way into the ears of the people of the Coast, trying to find fertile ground for it's message among the populace.

If you fancy feats of boldness, adventure and derring-do,
If you tire of drudgery, day in, day out; this song is for you.
There is a group of people, who lead their lives apart,
from the boredom and sameness that serves to grey the heart.

We strive to be the stuff of legend, we settle not for mediocre,
And we welcome all people to our ranks, both serious and practical joker.
If you, my friend, have the desire to count yourself among our number.
Then rush yourself to the Lady's Hall, tarry not, nor slumber.

For the Lady Who Smiles asks us to worry not with consequence.
We simply act, leaving fate to her, and do so with confidence.
If you wish to join our ranks, and to sameness not be beholden.
Come to the hall of the Lady Who Smiles, and ask for Liam the Golden.

He will introduce you, to the Fellows of the Fateful Coin.
He will test your boldness, to see if you are fit to join.
And if he tests your heart, and sees a man of fateful action,
He just may make you one of us, and count you among our faction.

A formal challenge is issued publicly by writ,

"Be it known that Boris Vyacheslav, Knight-Commander of the Order of the Crimson Guard, on the 11th day of Elesias 1352DR, does defy Maximilian Blackthorne, Commander of the Zhentarim, in answer to damages rendered to his Khazark and threats against his own person, and challenges him to personal combat.

For his victory Boris requires the surrender of Zhentarim assassin and Sword Coast Commercial Exchange Chief Treasurer Wren Di'Corvi to Thayan custody. In the case of his defeat, the bounty of 300,000 bags of gold on Wren Di'Corvi's head will be withdrawn.

The contest is of skill at arms and strength between mortal men. Therefore, no elixirs, no wands, healing, no magics arcane or druidic, or of artifacts, no bardic inspirations, no divine blessings nor invocations of any kind are permitted before or during combat. Combatants may be inspected by a nominated magi from both parties before the duel for mutual assurance.

As is right and fitting, the fate of the defeated is determined at the mercy of the victor.

Venue to be arranged privately.

Commander Blackthorne has seven days to answer this challenge."

Rumor flies through the city that a golden haired tiefling walked into the Thayan Enclave today only to be forcibly removed some time later, thrown from the premises by the guards with his face bruised and bloodied. Any bothering to ask would be informed that he gave as good as he got, and he claims that at least one of the "damn Thayan's" golems won't be operational for weeks, thanks to him.

A simple dressed man with a shortsword at his side is seen leaving the north gate of Baldur's Gate on horseback, setting north along the tradeway.

Any possible highwaymen or other wise curious folks would find that the man carries nothing but his sword, mundane clothing and an unsealed letter of consignment to Aurora's shop within Waterdeep. A rather lengthy list with little interest for most people.

A parchment is pasted over the challenge issued by the Thayan Knight Commander. While the handwriting is crisp and perfectly penned, the language is clearly indicative that the writer of the letter was likely furious at the time of writing.

To Boris Vyacheslav, Knight Commander of the Crimson Guard-

How dare you.

How dare you slander my name, placing allegiances upon my shoulders that do not exist, and consistently laying blame upon my shoulders for a crime which you have absolutely zero actual proof of my guilt in. You lay down a challenge as if seeking justice- if justice is what the Enclave desires, then bring it before the courts of Law, and let this farce be settled once and for all. But I know you will not, the Enclave will not. Because the moment you step outside of your enclave, you are nothing. The Khazark is nothing. The Enclave would be forced to stand and be judged impartially, and knows it would be found wanting.

How dare you place a veneer of honor upon what is little more than brutish thuggery? You claim it to be for damages rendered upon your Khazark? What honor lies in defending a man whose crimes, depravities and sins know no bounds? Truly, is this honor? To blindly accept what you know in your heart is unjust? Well I know your vows, and dedication. Many, many times have I willingly defended you, and our friendship; and long did I claim you an honorable man- but no. There is no honor in this, in defense of a wanton degenerate such as is the Khazark Habdilof. It is many things... but honorable is not one of them.

Most of all, Knight Commander, how DARE you seek to barter with another for MY life? I am no slave, no commodity to be traded- NO man has the right to hand me over to another. I will be no prize for your childish chest pounding. Your challenge is in vain, you risk your life for nothing.

If it is a challenge you wish to make because your Khazark is too craven to fight his own battles, then so be it. Bring your challenge to me, Knight Commander Vyacheslav. Stand in defense of "damages done to your Khazark." And I shall bring with me those whose lives have been damaged by him. Those who have been relentlessly pursued by his disgusting appetite, those who came to great harm simply for acting upon their gods given right to say "no", those who have lost loved ones forever all because of your Khazark's petty, wounded ego.

You will be but one man.

We will be legion.

During the busiest time of the day, a lone horseman clad in an obsidian fullplate, canters up to the Eastern Gates, stopping several yards short of the gate guards. His one-eyed gaze swept over the crowd indifferently, as if they were nothing more than sheep. A dozen heartbeats later he began his proclamation, his voice commanding attention.

"Let it be known that honorable men such as I, men of esteem and pride, do not lower themselves to dueling honorless, thieving dogs such as the 'Knight-Commander' Vyacheslav. Dogs which are such complete and utter disappointments, that even in their greatest failures they do not have the face to perform their duty. Such mongrels are to be put down, not dueled. Yet he sees it fit to dictate rules and regulations to ME? Alas, I can not stand aside and let my honor be besieged by a mangy cur. As difficult as it may be for those dwelling within the Thayan Enclave to understand, I do not personally own any slaves, therefore I have no one to 'surrender'. However I will gladly grant him a swift end to the misery which he claims as his life."

He sweeps the crowd with his eye once again, then fixes it on a peasant nearby. As their gazes lock, the peasant can't seem to look away, the horseman holds his gaze for several moments longer. Suddenly he tosses a small pouch filled with coins with a sealed letter attached to it in the man's direction.

"Off to the Thayan pigsty with you."

At that, the rider turns his black Amphailan charger and gallops away through the Farmlands, eventually turning northwards.

The aforementioned peasant is none other than the People's Pugilist, Furio Romero. He catches the coin pouch with a deft hand and offers a wink to the Zhent as he rides off...

He grins, for his ploy had worked. He had played the doe-eyed fool, and held the rich man's gaze long enough to convince him that he was the man for the job. He pockets both the coin and letter.

"We're drinking tonight, lads!" he shouts to the similar-looking ruffians around him once the rider had left, followed by cheering.

.... Later that evening, a solitary figure slips unseen from the Elfsong Tavern amid chants of "Three cheers for the Damsel of Darkhold!" He slinks onto the Thayan Enclave's compound and slides the letter under the door. The man has been through enough, what with that loss of face... he thought to himself, before padding off into the streets...

Combatants may be inspected by a nominated magi from both parties before the duel for mutual assurance.

As is right and fitting, the fate of the defeated is determined at the mercy of the victor.

Venue to be arranged privately.

Commander Blackthorne has seven days to answer this challenge."

//you've got mail
*A man in Ebon-hued Armor would begin to laugh uncontrollably at the speech made by the one eyed rider. Once he would begin to regain his composure, he yells from the crowd* "If you are such an honorable man how come you refuse an honorable challenge! GO AND RUN COWARD BACK TO YOUR KEEP! SHOW US THE COWARDICE OF THE ZHENT COMMANDER!"
//nope, your character was not there. Also l2read with comprehension.

//nah, interacting with an NPC. If you two have issues with me, try to work it out in some other way, rather than trying to bully your way into RP on the forums ;)
