I always wanted a skechy slum district in bg, where the flaming fist are a token thing, the area ran by crime lords and the fists are paid off not to interfere unless it gets to rowdy. It would be a enter at your own risk and don't bother us with your problems, what happens in the slums stays in the slums

the harbor doesnt really work because their headquarters are there.

If you, kleomenes, can get by satisfied with player-to-player RP, I'm honestly very happy for you.

Myself, I wish to interact—reliably in fair and consistent amount—with the Duchal court, with the Flaming Fists, with merchants of the Wide, with the few non-PC run guilds housed in BG by Lore, etc. As far as I know, those aspects are the domain of DMs. Not forgetting to mention that I like playing with DMs because they have tools at their disposal that Plsyers do not.

And, those Lore based, Forgotten Realms aspects are a yuge part of why I choose this Server.

If the Players are a river, then DMs are to guide that river through trials and tribulations from source to sea.

You know very well that a Player can only do so much without DM intervention, mostly IC but st times OOC. And when one is playing like I do, when I consider my RP always having a chance to make actual affects upon the Server, even teeny tiny, that requires the DM.

As D&D has always been like this.

Sure, but thats off topic for "how can we get RP in the City, BG" as clearly the bulk of RP that happens on this server is player to player.

DMing doesn't bring RP anywhere with any permanency, players do. DMs only enhance it, as they can in no way cover the whole player base round the clock and do so fairly. They are a garnish, not the meal itself.

In June my character held an event (costume ball) out in the north farmlands for charity. I oocly did it simply because, not only did it fit the character, but also because I thought it would be a great way to get many together in the area and would open RP avenues that might not have occurred elsewhere. It went wonderfully, with many players pitching in to help and so many players showing up to RP (thank you all again so much!<3).

RP can be brought to the Gate, and without the DM team, but it does take effort. Not saying you have to hold a ball but what of something like planning an open pub crawl on a certain date? Leave notes around for the first meeting of the Rancorous Rhymers? Some of us actively avoid FAI just to try and bring RP to other places (i.e. Halls of Inner Light, Helm & Cloak, etc). It really would be wonderful to see more in the city!

It is totally on topic! So many players only log certain Toons when a DM event calls for it. So many players go to where the DM action is, for their Guild especially, and if there is no DM action, the Player logs their Loot Farming toon instead.

I guess you are arguing quantity over quality, when discussing the bulk of RP? DM, if it was solely done in BG by at least 1 DM, would significantly change where Players go to "hang out" with their Toon. And EXACTLY like you say: DMs enhance RP, so that is totally sought out. It matters not about covering the whole Server, because we're actually just talking about Baldur's Gate city, right? Or did I miss something's about your context?

If you want to continue with metaphors, I'd argue the meal is the campaign/storyline. You need them with some regularity to stay healthy. Players can serve meals, surely, but their tools/ingredients are limited, where a DMs are not (or at least the least limited).

I wonder if you are interpreting me as stating "DMs must solve this problem!" Which, I am not. What I am saying is more DM or focused DM attention in Baldur's Gate would lure players there in droves. I can only be proved wrong in this by a DM(s) giving it a try, starting today (!!!), and seeing what happens over the following weeks.

OK! Let me state this as a DM, then: If I see more player activity in Baldur's Gate, I'll jump in sometimes to liven up the city.

I can't promise you interactions with the dukes, however, as that requires special audience (and thus player request). But I can always bring out Flaming Fist Bruiser Eddy 'the Plank' and his team to create some more dynamic life to the city. Or something else.

But I have to admit I am most likely to start DMing where I see people hang out (other than the FAI, which I largely avoid as a DM), so people need to be RPing in Baldur's Gate already.

Awesome!

So, I've been wondering where to go to get some RP as of late. I keep going to FAI, and occasionally I will stumble upon (mostly) familiar faces that provide entertaining RP. However, I'd love to change things up and do some RP somewhere other than the campfire at FAI.

So, any recommendations? Obviously BG seems like the place to be now and I'm glad for it, but are there any other places with a decent chance of meeting other players?

In Baldur's Gate, the following places are always welcome to visitors:
  • The Minstrel's Muse tavern (in docks, map is called Darius Holding Company)
  • The Twilight Rose festhall (in docks, totally not a brothel)
  • Halls of Inner Light multi-faith temple & festhall (in palace district)
The Elfsong patio is also a good place to loiter. The campfire might also be, near the spawnpoint.

I don't see anyone gathering regularly at other places except BG and FAI.

One can also add to that list:

- Elfsong Tavern proper
- Blade & Stars
- Helm & Cloak
- Blushing Mermaid
- The Wide (which should be an economic hub)
- The Ducal reception hall

In the Underdark you really only have one option, and that's Gloura's Wings. That's perhaps something the dev team should look at - more/better areas of congregation. There is RP within the guild halls, but unfortunately they tend to lock themselves in there and never come out. That isn't a knock on the guilds (they're great guilds) but that's the truth.

Bregan D'aerthe's guild hall will be partially open to the public (the pub area only) at next update. We had a vote and everyone in the guild thought it was a good idea and would overall, hopefully, help with finding RP in the Underdark.
